WOMEN SMOKERS

ARE MORE CARELESS

WATERBURY, Conn., Nov. 1 (U. P.) —Women shoppers who smoke,

and not men, create fire hazards in department stores, according to the city fire board. The board voted to ask for an ordinance forbidding smoking in department stores. Members said men rarely smoke while shopping, but Women do, and drop ashes near inflammable materials.

A transit of the little planet Mercury across the sun’s face—a phenomenon so rare it occurs only 13 times a century—will occur the afternoon of Nov. 11. It will be the first transit of Mercury visible in the Americas since 1924 and the only one until 1953 to be seen anywhere on the earth. Not before 1973 will so favorable a transit occur.

Mail Early to Canada a

Canada? Parcel post still goes there. But since addressees must comply with customs regulations before: delivery, it is wise to mail anything up thére as early as possible if you expect it to be there Christmas morning. If you're sending just a card, a letter or some small package, you may wait until Dec. 15 or even until Dec. 18 for Newfoundland, Ontario and Quebec. Postal relations with Canada are the nearest normal. In the Western Hemisphere, you may wait until a day or two beforg \Dec. 21 to mail a Yule greeting to uba, but for Argentina, you'd better have it in the mails early enough to reach New York by Nov 30.
