Colorado Has a

Speeding Toward All-America

By CARL REICH United Press Staff Correspondent

DENVER, Oct. 31 (U. P.).—Curlyhaired Leo Stasica is Colorado University’s all-America hope this year, but unlike Whizzer White, who was the whole show at Colorado in 1937, Loping Leo may be deprived of the honor because of competition from a teammate. Stasica, a Rockford, Ill, youth, has attracted the attention of eastern professional scouts this year and at least one all-America selector has commented that his running and passing were almost—if not—the equal of the ‘unchallenged Whizzer. Stasica is in a predicament remi-

had the finest pair of tailbacks in the old: Rocky Mountain Conference in Bill (Kayo) Lam and Duke Counter. Where Lam couldn’t sneak his way to a touchdown, Counter would come in and smash over the

ference berths and a scattering of all-America votes because both were so good that Coach Bunny Oakes was in hot water all season trying to ,decide which man to play.

© “Extras” Also Good

Last year Stasica ran into the same situation and this year his competition has doubled. While Whizzer White was Colorado’s entire offense three years ago, Stasica spends a lot of time on the bench because Coach Frank Potts, who succeeded Oakes, has two other fine tailbacks and he keeps the work

fairly well divided. Potts’ “extras” are Paul McClung, 195-pound junior from Denver, and Vern Lockhard of Akron, Colo. McClung is the fullback type who gains through sheer drive and power. If the opposing line is too tough for him to crack, Potts then sends in Stasica, who spreads the

shake loose for a long run. Then if Stasica does not click, Potts calls on Lockhard, who can hit the line, run the ends or pitch passes.

Goes After the Lead

Stasica scored only 18 points last year, but he is a‘ big threat to lead the conference this year with 42 points already to his credit. His next big test will come on Nov. 9 when Colorado meets Missouri and its passing Paul Christman at Boulder. Stasica, McClung and Lockhard all were members of the club which was shellacked 30-0 by the Missourians in 1939. Last Saturday Colorado topped the conference record by beating Wyoming 62-0 to remain unbeaten in its title defense campaign. Stasica scored two touchdowns and passed for a third. McClung also tallied twice, threw three more touchdown passes and kicked one of the extra points. Lockhard chalked up one touchdown. ) Saturday Colorado tackles Utah in what promises to be a test of offensive strength.

Boy, an Orchid For the Hoyas

By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Service Sports Editor ONE OF THE MOST underpublicized college teams is that of Georgetown, which has compiled 21 victories and been held even once in its last 22 starts. The Hoyas, sparked by a remarkable quarterback, Joe MecFadden, are a three-team power=house and pass with deadly accuracy. Whenever he suspects that the outfit on the field is growing the least bit weary, Jack Hagerty sends in Ross Sorce, a 280-pound tackle. "And while the opposition is trying to figure whether it would be easier to go over or around this man mountain, the other 10 Hoyas are having-their breather. 2 8 =

L. W. ST. JOHN, the athletic director, and Francis Schmidt say Coach Carl Snavely’s signals from the bench during the CornellOhio State game finally got to ihe place they could call practically every play, That was more than the Buckeye players could do. 2 o ”

PENNSYLVANIA'S choice of plays against Michigan was poor, and scouts traced it to the old method of barking signals. |. Constantly shifting defenses make it too big a job for one man to spot weaknesses . Audible signals were all right back in the days when a team had no more than six or seven plays, but now clubs employ as many as 70 or 80, and that’s a few too many for some athletes, especially when a complex formation is tossed directly at them by a shouting quarterback. Nearly every varsity has one or more players who are pretty dumb, and teammates can stress their assignments in the huddle, and on the way back from it they have time to get through their heads just what they are supposed to do. This is one of the principal reasons why the huddle has so generally adopted, and why it is here to stay.

Medwick Signs a $20,000 Contract

NEW YORK, Oct. 31 (U. P.) —For the first time in several seasons, outfielder Joe Medwick of the Brooklyn Dodgers will not be numbered among baseball’s annual list of holdouts. Medwick, obtained last June from the St. Louis Cardinals along with pitcher Curt Davis for cash and several players, signed for approximately $20,000 immediately after the final game in Brooklyn this year, Dodger President Larry MacPhail said today. A seasonal recalcitrant when he was in St. Louis, Medwick reportedly went to MacPhail's office and said, “Pay me what you think I'm worth.”

OAKLAND, Cal. Oct. 31 (U. P)). —Lou Nova, one-time heavyweight contender, made an unimpressive start on the comeback trail last night when he whaled the daylights out of Johnny Erjevac, Duluth, and scored: a technical knockout in the fifth round of a scheduled 10-round match at:Oakland Auditorium. Nova, inactive since he was knocked out by Tony Galento nearly 18 months ago, was in fine physical condition but his timing was bad and his footwork looked sloppy. The Yogi-Man floored Erjevac in the first round for a two-count, and using his 16% pound weight edge, wore down the Duluth fighter in the next three rounds.
