Personal Maid's Tricks on Care Up One's Sleeve
>
OF COURSE it would be heavenly to have a personal maid to take care of one’s clothes. But suppose one’s budget hasn't reached the opulent stage. Suppose, in fact, it’s one of those budgets that lapse into gentle swoons when confronted with unexpected cleaning or pressing bills. en it’s an excelleht idea to have a few of the personal maid's tricks on (garment care up one’s sleeve. Any maid worth her salt is an expert on spot removal, and her ammunition against spots is likely to include a bottle of Javel water. Javel water is useful in attacking fruit, blood and perspiration stains, ink, mildew or wax. It can be made easily at home and keeps indefinitely. ‘The formula: Add one quart of boiling wéter to one pound of wash.Ing soda in an enameled pan. In another container mix one-half pound of chloride of lime with two quarts of cold water. When the latter mixture has settled, pour the clear liquid into the soda solution. Stere in colored bottles to prevent the light’s affecting its strength,
each squash. Return to oven and
bake for 15 minutes longer.
The Question Box
Q—Is it safe to use food from cans that are dented? A—Unless the dent enough to make the can leak, no harm will be done to the food. Never use the food from leaking cans, either home canned or commercial products. | Q—Should wooden kegs or casks, be sterilized before storing pickles in ‘them? A—The inside surface should be brushed with melted paraffin which is then burned off. This is not only sterilizes the container, but fills in the pores with the melted wax. Q—Is it proper to return shower and wedding gifts if the wedding is called off? A—Yes.

through a fruit staih will eradicate it, but if it is stubborn, a mixture of equal parts of Javel water and boiling water will be effective. The material should be rinsed in boiling water. Weak ammonia or peroxide solutions also may turn the trick. Blood stains should be soaked in cold water. If the fabric is washable, Javel water, or nabhtha soap or ammonia may be added to warm water for laundering. If the material is not washable, the spot may be covered with a paste made of laundry starch which is allowed to dry and then brushed off. Or chlo_roform may be used on the stain.
Removing Ink
Fresh ink spots may be removed with water, or sour milk may be used if the ink already has dried. " Salt and lemon juice may be used on fabrics whose color will not be affected. Or2using a few drops of oxalic acid and Javel water alternately should banish the spot. Red ink stains require cold water followed by ammonia or Javel ‘water. Javel water will vanquish mildew effectively too—or lemon juice and sunshine may team against the enemy. Oxalic acid and Javel water usually will take care lof perspiration stains. Silks should be sponged lightly with either one and covered with powdered chalk. A strong soap or borax solution also may be used for perspiration stains. If the fabric may be boiled, that will remove perspiration odor — but if it cannot, choloform will take care of the problem. For wax spots, first serape off as much wax as possible and then press with a warm iron over blotting paper. The good soldier, Javel water, also may be rushed into battle—or try warm alcohol (and be sure to warm’ [it over water rather than direct heat). Some other stains and their remedies are: Wine—if fresh, dry salt; if dry, boiling water. ° Tea—cold water; soaking in ammonia or borax; soaking in gylcerin; pouring boiling water .forcefully through fabric; peroxice and diluted ammonia followed by diluted acetic acid and water.
Grease Stains
Paint, varnish or tar—benzine, gasoline, wool alcohol or turpentine; if dry, softén with grease or soak in.benzine and then launder: chloroform should be used for delicate colors, : Milk or cream—rinsing in .cold water followed by soap and cold water. Grease—for non-washable fabrics, (1) absorb by using fuller’s earth, starch, magnesia or French chalk, covering the spot and placing blotters below fabric and above powder; then pressing with warm iron, or (2) dissolving with ether, alcohol, gasolfhe or chloroform, placing blotter below spot while working; for washable materials, naphtha soap and cold water after softening grease with turpentine or fat. Vaseline spots: should be «soaked in kerosene before washing and automobile grease spots in gasoline. Egg—cold water. Chewing gum-——gasoline. Coffee — boiling water poured through fabric, or,:if the stain is set, cover with borax and water or ammonia and glycerin, and then wash, Glue—white vinegar acid. 4 Today's Recipe Baked Acorn Squash and Sausages (Serves 6) Three acorn squashes, 3% teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons butter, 2 apples, 2 tablespdons sugar, 12 , sausages. : Wash squashes: cut in half and clean.
