Steel Shares Lead Advance As Trading Picks Up; Bonds Firm.
NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (U./P.). — Stocks advanced fractions to more

Street described as a reaction to the Lewis speech recommending election of Wendell L. Willkie. Trading increased. Steel issues were leaders with Republic and U. 8. Steel the most active. The latter gained mote than a point before meeting moderate profit-taking. Bethlehem ‘was up more than a point. Coppers made small gains and motors were firm. Chemicals had gains ranging to nearly 2 points in Dow. Rails, oils, mercantile shares, tire issues and rail equipments joined the rise. American Locomo~ tive preferred made a new high at 783s, up 17% points. : Air line issues added small amounts to yesterday’s gains. Farm stocks improved and aircrafts moved higher after early irregularity. Standard Oil of New Jersey rose nearly a point. Johns-Man-ville was firm. Business news. was favorable. Bonds were firm. Commodities were mixed, weakness developing in wheat. Cotton was steady and hides and copper firm.

DEALER LICENSE REPEAL CARRIES THREAT OF WAR
Council Won't Consider the Move Until ‘After the Election.
Behind the move to repeal the City's poultry license ordinance which operates virtually as a tariff against itinerary poultry, butter, egg and cheese merchants is the smauldering threat of a trade war in Central Indiana. The repealer was introduced into City Council Monday . night, but will not be considered until the first Council meeting after election, Nov. 18. It was presented at the request of some local dealers who fear nearby cities and towns may pass reprisal ordinances unless the Indianapolis license system is abolished. Enacted seven years ago to protect the local market, the ordinance imposes a $25 annual license fee on Indianapolis merchants and a $200 annual fee on merchants who have no regularly established outlets here. Wiped Out Itinerants In effect, the $200 fee has wiped out large scale itinerant trade, although laxity in its enforcement has permitted some itinerants to slip into town and do business with out interference. ; Last month, however, . enforce« ment suddenly tightened. {HUNT EXTENDED FOR ~ SUSPECTED SLAYER
A ‘police alarm was sounded throughout the Middle West today for James Prather, 26, of 1414 English Ave., wanted in connection with the fatal ‘shooting yesterday of his estranged wife, Rosalind. Mrs. Prather was shot at the Wal-Mac Restaurant, 1516 N. Iili-} nois St. Police said that fdllowing the shooting Prather ran to the corner of 14th St. and Capitol Ave., where he took a cab and was driven to an English Ave. address. He has not been seen since. Prather is said to have gone to the restaurant to attempt a reconciliation with his is wife.
