Huge Body Presses to Turn Out Fuselage Parts: Which

gether for Assembly Factories.
By JOHN LOVE Timea Special Writer
WASHINGTON, Oct. 25.—Here is how the automobile
dustry will make airplanes
by mass-production methods:
The facilities of all the plants will be offered for Government orders. | The body parts of those planes whose designs are now understood to be standardized (two models
are reported) will divided
among the companies of the
industry. With these parts given preference on the factory schedules, the ig auto-body presses will form up sec-
tions for airplane fuseliges ‘by a method which -substitutes minutes for the hours now required for the hand work in the airplane industry. The completed parts, gathered from all the body pla engaged on the assignment, will be taken to the factories of the irplane industry, including the fus lage plant to be erected in Columbus, O. (The
automobile plants cannot assemble bombers—their ceilings are too low.)
Understhe leadership of the Automobile Man 3’ Association, a meeting is being called in Detroit for today by its president, Alvan Macauley, to be attend sentatives of all the coi gluding Ford. Ford and Packard
and a Buick engine contract is in the works. At the meeting today the companies will ing out the program coThe size of the orders rected to the automochile is not yet known, prebably not fully decided. Inasmuch as tgol and die work for a single type pf airplane in mass production would run io enormous cost—far beyond that involved in the ordinary [automobile model—it is supposed the production of one model of airplane would run into the thousands.
All Plants May Benefit
Once the big presses start forming up the aircraft-body and wing
sections they would need to be tied up on plane work only a few weeks, at a time., The combin body ca-| pacity of the nation is|now turn-| ing out between 90,000 sets of auto] parts a week. MASS WHIPPING IN SCHOOL IS PROBED
DANDRIDGE, Tenn. Oct. 25 (U. S.).—Supt. W. Cx Waters of Jeilerson County schools said today he would begin immediate investigation of charges by a group of parents that 58 children were “unmercifully whipped without reason” at the New Market school near here. : : H. T. ‘Nichols, New Market farmer who led the protesting parents, said the whippings were administered last Friday after a “disturbance” ‘at a school piay.

It is expected the sefs of parts! will be scattered amo most or all of the body plantg, such as those of Fisher, Briggs| and Murray, as well as the |automobile plants with presses capable of taking panels as large as those in the planes. Most of the plants are in Michigan and Ohip, but there is substantial capacity on the Pacific Coast, in Memphis, the New York and Philadelphia districts. ; decision of the Autom facturers’ Association members’ capacity,

In its resolution this week the association said its members “have undertaken to subordinate work -on model changes to the extent necessary.” “If the plane order runs to anything like 10,000 units the manufacture of current models may be

delivery schedules — hody parts could be cut, shaped and piled, but there would be no point to rushing through large tonnages of them
FOR GAS SAVING
Horsepower Increased Without Raising Cost for License Plates.
America’s newest automobile, the 1Americar, is on display at Wiliys dealers. § : This car, newly engineered from bumper to bumper hy the noted engineer, Delmar G. Roos, represents the fulfillment of ideas developed over a period of years by Joseph W,. Frazer, who, with 8 new group of associates, now is in charge of Willys-Overland Motors, Inc.
features available in higher-priced cars. Streamlining is carried out in interior lines. The rear section of the body is fashioned in the popular “torpedo” style. Weight has been held to economical limits consistent with safety and riding comfort. The overall length is 181 inches. Interiors e i in a new, specially fabricated Canda cloth. Three Body Types Three body types are offered: Four-door: sedan, coupe and station wagon. Without exceeding piston displacement that keeps the car in a low license rate, the new power
‘plant has been developed to give 63
horsepower at 3800; revolutions a minute (65 h. p. with special aluminum head), fast acceleration and a top speed of more than 80 miles. an hour in the sedan. Reports of more than 35 miles per gallon of gasoline developed in factory tests indicate 30 miles or more per gallon as an attainable average for ordinary country driving speeds. Without increasing the number of cylinders or cylinder displacement, Americar engineers developed additional horsepower with manifolding that gives improved fuel supply to the combustion chamber and permits burned gases to escape with less resistance. L-Head Engine The engine, is the L-head type with a cylinder bore of 3% inches and a stroke ofg4”: inches. Rated taxable horsepower is 15.63. . A compression ratio of 648 and pressure lubrication to "all~ main connecting rod bearings are standard. A full synchro-mesh transmission is new this year, with helical rather than spur gears through three speeds and rod linkage to the remote comftrol lever on the steering (column. With the new hypoid rear axle, two universal joints are used. There is a new approach to the problem of ' dampening vibrations from- the engine to the transmis{sion by means of the clutch driving plate. The new clutch driving plate has hydraulic absorbers. A new cam-and-lever type of steering gear is used. The standard steering wheel has a 17-inch circumference and the car may be turned in a radius of 18 feet.
‘PILOT’ CLEARS WAY FOR LIGHTNING BOLTS
SWAMPSCOTT, Mass, Oct. 25 (U. P.).— Even. lightning must have a leader to follow in an electrical storm, according to G. D. McCann, Westinghouse electrical expert. Mr. McCann says that a weak, almost invisible, preliminary stroke known is the “pilot” picks its way through the atmosphere at the relatively slow speed of 100 miles a second. With a path thus cleared a pow-

Times Special : CHICAGO, Oct. 25—The 1941 cars go a long way foward counteracting the two principal sources of

and all are better balanced,” Judge Porter said. “Safety engineers have been able fo perfect the suspension development of the past four years to a point where sidesway and body rofl is minimized to a marked extent, thus reducing skidding tendencies and improving steering qualities. “From the standpoint of fender styling, as it affects inspection of tires for cuts and wear and easier application of tire chains when needed for snow or ice, the large majority of models show some slight improvement. The new method of transmitting engine power through liquid coup-
