~ Whizzer Is Still a Whizzer After His Oxford Interlude

‘Bounces Right Back Great Dutch Clark

to Stardom Just Like the

By PAUL SCHEFFELS

United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Oct. 24.—Byron (Whizzer) White, following the precedent set by the great Earl (Dutch) Clark, has bounced back into stardom after a year's retirement as a member of the Detroit Lions National League club.

Clark, now coach of the

Cleveland Rams, was named

all-league professional quarterback in 1931 and 1932 but in-terrupted-his spectacular career the following year to return

to his alma mater—Colorado College—as a coach. He came ~ back to the pro ranks, after one season's layoff, .and turned in a greater record

than before. Today, individual statistics for the first half of the season reveal that White, who retired last year to go to Oxford, has regained his football finesse. He was All-Amer-ican in 1037 and the National League's leading ground-gainer in 1988, and now leads the professional ground-gainers. In his first year in professional football, White received $15,000 from ‘ the Pittsburgh Pirates, the highest salary ever paid a National League player, He stayed out of competi-

attempts so far he has gained 247 yards for an average of three per Trip. In addition, he has completed 17 out of 40 passes for 199 yards and an average of 423, seventh best in the league, Five players, however, are within 41 yards of Whizzer, Banks McFadden, Brooklyn rookie, is second with 240 yards in 53 attempts. Tuffy Leemans, New York Giants’ star who will be sidelined three weeks with an injured back, is third with 239 yards in 73 tries. Parker Hall, Cleveland, is fourth with 238, Marshall Goldberg, Cardinals, fifth with 212, and Pug Manders, Brooklyn, sixth with 206. Sammy Baugh of Washington has a wide edge in passing. He has completed 58 passes out of 81 for 814 yards and leads the league with

* tion next season and went abroadeight touchdown tosses. 'He has

to further his education. He came home. because of the war and enrolled at Yale. An offer of about $7800 brought him back into the pro ranks this fall after the Lions had swung a deal with Art Rooney, Pittsburgh owner.

White may be the first player in Ro pro history to lead the league in|P'SX

ground-gaining for two successive years. If you discount his year’s

recess, he has a chance. In 83

Hospital Squads Worry Big Ten Title Chasers

By STEVE SNIDER J United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Oct. 24.—Shorts from Midweek scrimmages—Injuries have broken more champions than any

other factor jn football and this week’s list of casualties may figure highly. . . . Bill Decorrevont of Northwestern, Bruce Smith of -Minnesota, Mike Byelene of Purdue, Dick Fisher of Ohio State and George Rettinger of Illinois are nursing sprains, bumps, bruises and the like. . . Smith, who scored both Minnesota touchdowns against Ohio State, has an assortment of wounds, yet is the only one of the five expected to see much ac-

tion. . . . Healthiest club in the Big Ten is Michigan. . . . It came out of the Illinois game at: its season’s physical peak. . . . Statistics reveal In-

4 [diana as possessing the tightest for-

ward pass defense in the Conference, . . . It's.the only team in the league against which none have been completed. . . The credit, however, belongs mostly to Iowa, whose passers couldn't spot a receiver at five paces. . . . Wisconsin is off to the same sort of start it made in 1939 and part of the answer is fumblitis. . The Badgers have lost the ball on fumbles twice as many times as any

other conference team. . , George Bernhardt Illinois guard, tackle, quarterback, halfback and fullback, missed a lot of practice because of injury and spent part of his time petween halves of the Michigan game rehearsing plays. . . . Ohio State interviewers discovered the “bad pass from center” which halted a last-

iminute drive on Minnesota's one-two-three-yard line hit the knee of a guard pulling out of the line. . . . Iowa's problem—Who'll star for Minnesota this week. . . . It was George Franck against Washington, Bill Daley against Nebraska and Smith at Ohio State. . . . Gopher well-wishers hope it’s hard-working, hard-luck Bob Paffrath. . . . He's carried the ball 10 times in three games, leads Gopher backs with an average of 10.9 yards per try. . Consensus of scouts who have watched Northwestern is the Wildcafs are getting their best line blocking since 1936, the championship year. . . . Fullback Milt Piepul of Notre Damé has Illinois plenty worried. . . . He'd be trouble enough on into-the-line plays with which

the Illini last week. . . . But Milt's favorite play is a sweeping reverse on which he scampers like a half-

back.

Draft Has Teams Up in Air—Baker

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 23s (U. P.). ~The military selective service draft has major league baseball teams up in the air about the prospects for next season, Del Baker, manager of the pennant-winning Detroit Tigers said today. Baker arrived in Portland yesterday from Detroit admin bi by his wife and 16-month-old son, Del Jr. The Detroit manager doesn’t believe the draft will take enough players to hurt baseball as a whole, but the uncertainty over which young fellows will be lost has the managers in a quandary. ' “We have several unmarried men on the Detroit team who are subt to the draft,” Baker said. “Tebtts, Greenberg, McOvsky, are all eligible to be taken. “But their numbers may not be called yet, or only one of them may be taken—it’s the uncertainty that has us in the air.”
