CANCER TREATMENT ADVANGES CLAIMED
CHICAGO, Oct. 23. — “Notable progress has been made in the treatment of gynecologic cancer,” Dr. George Kamperman of Detroit declared here today at the meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Results from treatment of cancer of the uterus, ovaries or other reproductive organs in women are, however, “still far from what is desired,” he said. Too many women fail to consult their doctors early enough, he said, and too many doctors fail to make early diagnoses. “The discouraging fact is that so many cases when first applying for treament are already far advanced,” he said. “We can only ‘emphasize that education of both the profession and laity must be persistently continued.” : Dr. Kamperman ascribed the progress in curing this kind of cancer to increasing use of radium and super-voltage X-ray treatments, citing figures from a total of 845 cases to show how the five and 10year survivals increased after these forms of treatment were used instead of or in combination with surgical operations.

10 SAILORS RESCUED AFTER 27-DAY DRIFT
BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 23 (U. PB). —Ten Greek sailors, who drifted 27 days in an open. lifeboat in the
South Atlantic after their vessel had been sunk, were safe in Buenos Aires today. An English steamer, which picked them up at sea, landed them here yesterday. They were members of the crew of the Greek freighter, Antonis Chandris, 4399 tons, which left Cardiff, England, Aug. 20 laden with coal for Buenos Aires. The sailors said that on Sept. 8 a German warship stopped their vessel and ordered the crew into lifeboats, giving the men time to take only a few boxes of biscuits and some cans of corned beef and condensed milk. :

Nine Days Asleep, Beauty Is Unidentified
By JOAN YOUNGER
United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, Oct. 23.—She was young, pretty and charming when she walked into the swank Hotel Pierre here on a busy Sunday afternoon nine days ago and asked for a $7 room. . Although she had no baggage she looked like such a nice girl that the clerk took a chance and she registered under the name of Mary Rodgers. He meant to check on her later—but he forgot. Today Mary Rodgers is lying in a public ward at Bellevue Hospital. Ravaged by pneumonia and by the overdose of sleeping tablets she took that Sunday afternoon, she is not as pretty as she was—but for'lack of a better name, the hospital calls her “The Sleeping Beauty.” : For although some 50 people have made inquiries about her and the

Missing Persons has checked and rechecked every known detail, Mary Rodgers remains a mystery: And the “Sleeping Beauty” sleeps on. Today she moaned a little, tossing slightly in her hospital bed. For nine days she has been unconscious, her eyes closed, her face swollen and blotched from the tablets she swallowed. Seemingly, she comes from a good home. Her clothing—a little black dress, black shoes, black purse and black beret hat—is of good quality, although it has seen a lot of wear.
white, were well cared for. Her brown hair was waved recently. She is between 25 and 30 years old, the doctors think, and she has a good figure, marked by no signs of hunger, poverty or ill-treatment. But her large black pocketbook gave up no clues. It held only a round gold compact, a lipstick and a few coins. At first she was thought to be a missing night club singer, then someone suggested she might be a model. There is some hope, that Mary Rodgers will recover. But there is
