Towa Defeated At Own Game, Says Layden

Hoosiers’ Punch and Poise Effective

By ELMER LAYDEN

Notre Dame Coach

The sectional situation in 1940 football was clarified a . little last Saturday. Ji Tennessee for the moment stands at the top in the South with Mississippi. In" the Southwest Texas A. & M, Texas and S. M. U. remain undefeated and impressive. Cornell, Boston College, Penn = sylvania, Fordham and Navy are still unbeaten. Surprising Stanford has the cleanest record on the Pacific coast, but Southern California is rolling into good form and, since being upset at Minnesota, Wash - ington is measuring up to pre-

Layden season predictions. In the Mid-west the major clean states belong to Michigan, Northwestefn, Minnesota and Notre Dame, : One of the main upsets was Baylor's 7-0 defeat of Villa Nova. The prize renaissance belongs to Tulane over Rice. One of the most significant week-end results was Temple's 21-19 over Michigan ‘State in an air battle—Ray Morrison, apostle of the short pass, is getting across his game. Typical of the times—more daring, more scoring—were Penn, 48; Princeton, 28 and Marquette, 27; Creighton, 27.

Tall Corn Is Shocked

Since Eddie Anderson's descent upon the Big Nine his Iowa team has been exhibit A of fighting spirit and poise. Saturday the Hawkeyes were beaten at their own game of punch and poise. Bo McMillin's - Hoosiers were really worked up. It must have upset even the calm and collected Iowans when the hurling Hoosiers, cashing in on a week of concentration on blocking and running, scored on a long gallop. The Hoosiers didn't go out of character entirely, however. In the second half, although out ahead, they threw enough passes to keep the Hawkeyes unsettled. Football fans have a double treat in store this week-end when Pennsylvania and Michigan meet. They will see not only two outstanding teams but two of the great backs of the nation. It will provide, I think, an interesting comparison of running style. Harmon has great speed, high knees, long stride, and cutbacks. Reagan, I understand, is a more elusive type. Where Harmon runs through a tackler Reagan evades him.

Purple Title Threat Now that Indiana has the taste

ys Over Shortridge

Washingon" High School football rooters were up and about early today and had their battle flag—white "W" on a purple background— flying over the Shortridge stronghold when classes began. The schools’ football teams were to argue it out this afternoon.

Ssh! Nota Word But Chicagols ~ Playing Again

CHICAGO, Oct. 23 (U. P)— Eleven-man football still lives at the University of Chicago despite withdrawal from the Big Ten, and the 1940 team today was headed toward what may be the best percentage record compiled by any Maroon team in the last 16 years. President Robert M. Hutchins disclaimed all knowledge of the operations of the full-sized team and on Stagg Field, where Chicago won the Big Ten title in 1924, the university Red Devils led the Unexpecteds, Gophers and Bears in the intramural six-mary football tournament. The Maroons comprise a squad of about 30 students, most of them regulars and freshmen last season when Chicago bowed out of the Big Ten after numerous inglorious: defeats, who organized to compete in “scrimmages” with other local schools. University coaches have given the full-sized team assistance. They were hosts on the university scrimmage field yesterday to the Wilson Junior College and won, 14 to 0, their second victory in three games.

Amateurs

of conference victory, the North-western-Indiana game becomes one of the ace games of the coming week-end. If the Hoosiers can

complement their air game with,

some effective running, they will be tough for anybody. The Purple will miss de Correvont if the latter does not recover from an injury incurred Saturday. Red Hahenstein did some .great running against Wisconsin when he supplemented de Correvont late in the game. In fact, his performance was far more consistent. But you can’t write off the value of de Correvont’s contribution on the two plays where he

clicked—a pass and a long run, each

producing a touchdown.

Northwestern is very much in the championship race.. The question mark in the line has been erased.
