WORK shorter hours or get more pay when the Govern-|A ment wage-hour “ceiling” comes down from 42 to 40 hours a

week starting next Thursday.

There's a mistaken impression in some parts of the A state that the minimum wage will be raised from 30 to 354 cents an hour but that doesn’t happen until 1945, according to William M. Schneider, W age-Hour Inspector for Indiana. A

But just cutting two hours Gd he work week itself will cause a good m a ny changes in Indlana Mr Schneider says. Assuming that all the 8272 business con - cerns affected (they muw be . engaged in interstate ¢ 0 m - merce to come under the regulation) will Roger Budrow Keep going at the same pace as heretofore, either 23,350 more workers must be hired or $42.430 paid out each week for overtime, he says, or perhaps some of both. In Marion County alone, 119.000 workers will be affected in 2568 concerns that come under this change. Of this total, 10,200 are so-called white collar” workers and in the state 33.000 Aare in this classification. The remaining are g¢hiefly| factory or industrial workers. These figures do not include some concerns that are already on the 40-hour week, have been on it | in fact since the 42-hour regulation | went into effect last year. The big | industries figured it just wasn't] profitable to operate for only two! hours on Saturday and then close | down. IM What will be the result? Mr. | Schneider says it will mean Satur- | days off for a good many persons Ch —just what proportion, of course, | is. impossible to forecast. Two con- | cerns so far are planning to work six hours on some days and Ls work Saturday. A good many will | decide to pay time-and-a-half over- | time for their Saturday work. Most retail ‘stores: or service | establishments don't come under |

the wage-hour provision but most |

factories do because their products |

are shipped across state borders, | Go

becoming interstate. Violations? Ninety per cent or more of them are cases of not] understanding: the law, says Mr. | Schneider, and less than 10 per | cent are cases of lng. 2

IT'S SURPRISING ont the steep- | est railroad grade in the country is not out West in the Rocky Moun- | tains. According to the Associated | Railways of Indiana, the steepest grade is down near Madison, Ind, and it's a 5.89 por | ost one,

| JUST IMAGINE ® having your | house illuminated with lights get-! ting their electric power through | the air instead of over wires! In the! Westinghouse lahoratories at Bloom- | field, N. J., yesterday more than 100 scientists and educators watched | a demonstration of “klystron,” new type of generator which the oo ventors said sends out beams of] power great disiances—and without wires. Eventually the generator might] turn lights on with power through | the air just as radio programs are | now received, the inventors claimed. 1. E. Mouromtseff, Westinghouse scientist, said the generator had potential value for producing heat for medical purposes and for improving the means of aircraft navination. He foresaw the time when it might increase the number of | television transmission chanels and the number of messages transmitted simultaneously over telephone wires. “The possible uses by | the apparatus- are limited only by the jmaginaiion, 4 Je Jectarsd:

11:00—Radio City, NBC. 2:00—Philharmonic-Symphony, CBS. 5:05—New Friends of Music,: NBC. 6:00—Jack Benny, WIRE. 7:00—Charlie McCarthy, WIRE. 8:00—Sunday Evening Hour, WFBM.

"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher - From the Indianapolis vantage point, the Philharmonic-Symphony broadcast outlook remains gloomy this week. And the NBC Symphony prospect is even gloomier. We have more or less accustomed ourselves to hearing Maestro Toscanini faintly, if at all, since WIRE is committed to carry NBC-Red network programs, while the orchestra is on the Blue hookup. But as regards the New York Philhar-monic-Symphony Orchestra, we have been spoiled to date. WFBM carried the Sunday afternoon broadcast series, if I am not mistaken, for: the entire 10 years it was on the air previous to this season. But the opening of the orchestra's 99th year and 11th broadcasting season on CBS last Sunday found the traditional two hours on WFBM filled with something else. Reception should be reasonably satisfactory over WBBM, - Chicago,’ “WHAS, Louisville, or KMOX, St. Louis, for those who are bound to have the Philharmonic’s musie, difficulties or not. But this probably

phone calls and letters to the local station.” The WIRE staff can tell you about irate reactions when that station ceased to carry the NBC Symphony concerts. And doubtless WFBM will soon have a similar story to relate. It may be argued that free radio entertainment, like gift horses, shouldn't be railed against. And it also may be urged that radio stations can’t keep going without selling time. But if I know.my listeners, such arguments won't quiet all the complaints. 2 #2 = Well, local reception or no local reception, the concerts go on, and here are the programs. The NBC Symphony Orchestra (9

Daum and Beatrice Goroe, both sopranos. They will be heard when Mr. Steinberg conducts Mendelssohn’s incidental music to “A Midsummer Night's Dream.” (Although we seldom hear anything but the Overture, Nocturne and * Scherzo from this music, there are also parts of it which call for soloists and chorus.) Also on the program are the E Flat Symphony of Mozart and the “Fire Bird” Suite of Stravinsky.

8 ” on It seems remarkable with such an increasing number of persons in the scholarly profession of musicology, that unknown scores of the masters keep turning up. But they do. And a case in point is the Bizet Symphony (in © major) which John Barbirolli and the Phil-harmonic-Symphony Orchestra are to play tomorrow (2 p. m., CBS). This work was written when the composer of “Carmen” was but 17. It somehow found its way into the archives of the Paris Conservatory and reposed there, unheard, until 1926. Then D. C. Parker, Bizet's Scottish biographer, found it and brought it to the attention of Felix Weingartner. Mr. Weingartner gave it its first hearing at Basle in February, 1935. In August, 1938, Howard Barlow conducted the American premiere with the Columbia Broadcasting Symphony, and two months later it was given in Paris during the centenary celebration of Bizet's birth. . Mr. Barbirolli’'s program tomorrow also lists the “Euryanthe” Overture of Weber and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. ” ” o Like Jascha Heifetz last week, Grace Moore is opening her recital season with a broadcast tomorrow night on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s - “Sunday Evening Hour.” She will sing an aria from Catalani’'s “La Wally” and songs hy Arensky and Sullivan. Victor Kolar will conduct the orchestra.

”n ” 4 The New Friends of Music broad-~ cast series is te recommence at 5:05 p. m. tomorrow on NBC-Blue. Bela Bartok and Paul Hindemith will he present to take part in performances of their own music. The program also . lists such distinguished contemporary names as

o'clock tonight) again will have ¥ 8

Schoenberg, Bloch and Krenek. » 8
