: Notre Dame Coach
I received two telegrams after our Georgia Tech game from alleged . Notre Dame fans who were “walking out” on us for reasons they did not express. The bitterness of their language betrayed the breed. They Were points-gamblers. Georgia Tech had scored more points than they had figured on. A small loyalty bet which does nobody any harm is all right. Indiana University Conn Favored,
2-3, to Whip McCoy Tonight
- Billy Continues Drive for, Shot at Louis
BOSTON, Oct. 18 (U. P.).—Handsome Billy Conn is a 5-3 favorite to beat Al McCoy, New England heavyweight champion, tonight at the Garden, and thus continue his campaign toward the world heavyweight title. * Conn, who already holds the light heavyweight crown, is favored over 26-year-old McCoy in this 10-round non-title tilt because of his youth, speed, skill and stamina.
Dangerous for Conn
Yet, many experts regard it as a dangerous bout for Conn because he is a slow starter; because it is only a 10-round affair, and because McCoy is a busy, hard-hitting mauler
forts might easily offset Conn's later surge. Al will outweigh Billy about 182 pounds to 176. Handsome Billy, only 21, will be making his first ring appearance since the stopped Bob Pastor in the 13th round at New York on Sept. 6, after landing several low blows. McCoy has been fighting for 10 years. And he was good enough in 1940 to knock out Nathan Mann and outpoint Melio Bettina, the southpaw from whom Conn won the light heavy diadem
Arcel Trains McCoy
Sharpening for this bout, McCoy did most of his training at Still-
tha? he would have the sole benefit of Ray Arcel’s instructions. Arcel, one of the best trainers in the game, will be in Al's corner tonight. Conn concluded his training at Kelley and Hayes’ Gym in Boston, but was not too impressive. Promoter Mike Jacobs of New York apparently hopes that Conn will defeat McCoy and go on to beat two or three -other prominent heavies, thus readying himself for Louis in June,
