Studios Deny Alien Rumors

Ask FBI Inquiry Into Refugee Hiring Story.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17 (U. P).— The motion picture industry is demanding a Federal investigation of rumors that American workers are being fired from studios by the hundreds so that European refugees can have their jobs. Producers charged that the spreaders of the reports were ‘seeking notoriety for themselves.” Y. Frank = Freeman of Paramount Studio, president of the Association of Motion Picture Producers, and Kenneth Thomson, executive secretary of the Screen Actors Guild, said the rumors were “absurd.” Of 19,511 persons employed by eight major studios, 18 may be classified as refugees from Germany or German-occupied countries, they said. They included four actors, two directors, a tailor, and 11 minor employees. Mr. Freeman classed as refugees persons who have come to this country since Jan. 1, 1938. He pointed out also that numerous film workers with foreign names and accents were imported long before the Hitler regime because of their talents, and that many were naturalized citizens. Producers and actors said they

felt compelled to take action be-

Here Tonight

Here is Tallulah Bankhead as Regina Giddens in “The Little Foxes,” Lillian Hellman’s well-spoken-of drama which opens at English’s tonight.

JAMES STEWART GETS A LETTER

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17 (U. P).— James Stewart dug into his mail today and found a letter from Judge Louis W. Kaufman. It wasn’t fan mail. Judge Kaufman asked him to explain why he hadn't answered a traffic citation issued last Wednesday which charged he was driving 45 miles an hour in a 20-mile zone. The letter said that if no response

was received in a reasonable length of time, the Court would hand down a bench warrant and send for the actor to make a first-hand explanation.

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES

Tallulah in Ruthless Role

Star of 'Little Foxes' Once Came Here as Cleopatra.

The last time Tallulah Bankhead appeared at English’s it was as the rapacious Egyptian charmer in Shakespear'e “Anthony and Cleopatra.” Tonight she reappears | there as the equally ruthless and | heartless Regina Giddens, the principal character in Lillian Hellman'’s “The Little Foxes.” So far as New York was concerned, Regina Giddens was decidedly the more preferable of these two characters. Miss Bankhead’s Cleopatra existed for less than a week on Broadway. But “The Little Foxes” enjoyed a year’s run, and comes to Indianapolis in the course of its country-wide tour as the most successful play in which Miss Bankhead has appeared on the American stage. : Miss Hellman’s drama is of a diabolically mercenary family of two brothers and a sister, and of the wives, husbands and children who are hopelessly caught in the web of their vicious contriving.
