EXPECTS CURD ON THIRD TERM
VanNuys Believes Citizens Will Put Constitutional Limit on Tenure.
Times Special WASHINGTON, Oct. 17.—Regardless of the result of the 1940 Presidential election, the American people will put some limitation on successive Presidential terms, Senator Frederick VanNuys (D. Ind.) predicted today. His prediction is based on experience as a Senate Judiciary subcommittee member in hearing testimony against the third term. “Whether President Roosevelt wins a third term or not, I am confident that the citizenry of the United States, through a constitutional amendment, will put some limitation on succession in the office of President of the United States,” Senator VanNuys said. “They will either make a constitutional provision for a single sixyear term or limit tenure to two terms of four years each. My observation is that the third-term idea does not appeal to a great majority of the American people. “Some of the outstanding men from all walks of life appeared before our committee to protest against it. They made a complete case, based on the philosophy of democratic government. No personalities were engaged in. President Roosevelt and his third-term campaign was not discussed. “But it was particularly significant that not one of the third-term backers of the President appeared to defend the third term idea.” Once upon the President’s “purge” list, Senator VanNuys has opposed the third term, but will not announce himself as a “Democrat for Willkie.” This further step was taken by Senator Edward R. Burke (D. Neb.), who was chairman of the anti-

Hitler Loses South Bend Invasion Cow On Road Brings Damage Suit
By TIM TIPPETT
HITLER, THANKS TO THE KINDNESS of a little girl, has been rescued from back alleys and dark streets where he wandered friendless for three weeks, and has been returned to his owner, Mrs.
Archie Cribbs of Niles, Mich.
Hitler, a stray cat, was born in May and disappeared three weeks
ago to show up later in South Bend.
benefactor, rescued the cat despite the black patch of fur which happened to grow just below his nose, making him look like the Nazi fueher. v? Mrs. Cribbs saw her pet's picture in a newspaper and contacted Miss Eisenhart. Now Hitler's home again—the invasion of South Bend merely an unpleasant memory. ” » ” THE PLACE is Oakdale, the time late afternoon. Enter Mr. and Mrs. “Pat” Holloway and son Buddy. Mr. Holloway opens the door of his automobile—and enter the villian. Wrapped around the steering column of the car, its head resting comfortably on the wheel, is a blue racer snake. Being a farmer, Mr. Holloway knows that blue racers are harmless and are valuable in catching mice and insects. Removing the uninvited guest from the car with a stick “Pat” placed the snake on the ground and without so much as a curtain call sneer the villian silently slithers away.

Chickens cross the road to get on the other side and that is probably why Floyd Curey’s cow decided to cross U. S. Road 10 in Marshall County. The only hitch was she never made it and Charles

DEAN MALKLEM and Jane Diedrich, fell in love and decided to do something about. They hunted up Huntington's Squire Z. T. Dungan, presented the license, then sat down and waited until 12:05 before they would allow the knot to be tied. It was five mijnutes past Friday. Reason—Friday’s unlucky. Result — Squire . Dungan was paid an extra $5 for the wait. Added result—everyone is happy. ” o ” HOWARD LEIGH, artist, who is exhibiting some of his work at Muncie this week, used to do portraits in oil. Several years ago he worked in Mexico. He made only portraits, all of them in oils. This spring he returned to Mexico and decided to look up two of his former models, both Mexicans, who had sat for portraits. He found them. Both were in jail and both charged with murder. Artist Leigh doesn’t paint portraits in oil anymore.

CHARLES GREEN, Muncie Spanish-American veteran, is not as old as he evidently appears. Recently he went to a meeting where veterans were being honored and started to take his place among the Spanish War veterans. An usher grabbed his arm informing him he couldn't sit there. “You belong up here,” the usher said. “This is the Civil War veterans group.”
