Had It Worked, Quarterback Would Have Been Commencded—Purdue Has It Tough

A few leaders toppled or

tottered. There were reassor-

tions and recessions. But generally the results of the third ig Saturday of intercollegiate football were kind to the

prophets who stood by the natural favor- |

ites. In my set—though

Less conclusive was Notre Dame's 26-20 over a crippled Georgia Tech. Bos‘ton College still looked like one of| the best in beating Temple, 33-20.! beunces of the day was that of Holy, The young Crusaders, badly

One Bad Kick Did It

- Little things turned more than one tide Saturday. : At Iowa, for instance, when a] Wisconsin punter in the second half stood less than the safe distance of| 10 yards behind the center, the kick was blocked and converted into a! touchdown which turned a stale-| mate into a rout. At Illinois, punter Ehni, whose kicks had kept Southern California at bay nearly all afternoon, once broke rhythm of his kicking steps and the ball went to the Trojan deep in Illinois territory as the result of a bungled punt. The winning touchdown evalved| from .a purely technical fault. Deep in its own territory Car-! negie Tech tried a quick kick on the second down of the game. The! kicker was hurried, the ball went almost straight up in the air. The! Crusaders recovered the ball on the Carnegie 26-yard line. In three plays

Buckeye Strategy Okeh

If Purdue had had Byelene, great runner and passer, against Michigan State the result .might have been different, Or would it? Take { Northwestern. The Purple figured | itself fortunate in having such backs {as Hahenstein and Soper to suppor or replace De Correvont. Both were unable to play Saturday—result: De | Correvont played 50 minutes and was the one man most responsible ‘for a sensational upset. Unluckily [for the Boilermakers, no one was lable to rise fully to the occasion as did De Correvont or the Wildcats. Incidentally, I dont agree that Ohio State was automatically at

own 20. True, the Buckeyes were {leading by three points, but from the | previous pattern of the game they {had small reason to believe that three points constituted victoryinsurance. Throwing from their own 20 was about the only way they {had of getting out of the hole, for their running attack was entirely | bottled up. Beyond their own 40, their opponents would be alert for| passes. There was a chance to sur-| prise the Wildcats on the 20. If) i the pass had succeeded, the quarterback probably would: have been ac{claimed without dissent.

What's a Guy to Do?

Our own game with Georgia | Tech reminds me of some letters I've | received from time to time with regard to substitution. Typical of one group is the correspondent who dei plored heav y substitution as “an evil institution.” On the other side is ithe fan who writes in “My heart bleeds for the poor fellows on the sidelines.” | It’s all in the point of view. We jus e as many substitutions as possible as a reward for faithful effort. At ‘the same time we do not use as | many as we'd like to because somemes strategy does not permit. |

Hammer Faces 2d Operation

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (U. P.) — Former Welterweight Champion Henry Armstrong is scheduled to undergo a second eye operation within a week, it was reported today. Armstrong, former holder of three boxing titles, had an inch of superfluous skin removed from over his left eye yesterday by Dr. Alexander Schiff, who intends to perform a similar operation over the right eye. After the second operation, Armstrong will return to his home ‘in California for several weeks of rest and then will go to Hot. Springs, Ark. to get in shape for a return title bout with Fritzie Zivic, Jan. 17 in New York. Zivic won the welter title from Armee strong earlier this month and inflicted wounds over Henry's right eye-which necessitates the delay before the second operation.

Times Special MUNCIE, Ind, Oct. 16. — Ball State's Cardinals, one of the winter book contenders for the 1940 Ipdiana Conference crown, open their drive for a place in the conference sun Saturday by invading the home gridiron of the strong Manchester Spartans. Coach Carl Burt's ‘Chesters’ have had a share of the conference championship melon sliced and on refrigeration for the past two seasons, only to have the Cardinals unlock the ice box late in the year with melting 20-14 setbacks. While both squads are crowded with veterans who should make the tussle one of the most bitter in the state Saturday, fans will especially watch the renewal. of the duel between Ball's Jimmy Phend and the Spartans’ Bill Milliner, two of the finest backs in the conference.
