Sneak Preview Ribbing Didn't Soothe Jimmy Stewart's Feelings
By PAUL HARRISON 3 Times Special Writer % HOLLYWOOD, Oct: 16.—THE RIBBERS AT METRO AREN'T HELPING Jimmy Stewart’s inferiority complex a bit, since the sneak
preview of “Philadelphia Story” at in which Mr, Stewart finally gets
cried, “Oh, no! And when Miss Hepburn refused Mr. Stewart, there was a long, audibile sigh of relief from the fan, who later applauded a reconciliation between the feminine star and Cary Grant. Mr. Stewart’s jeering pals might be impressed if they knew what Miss Hepburn herself thinks of him. Before she left Hollywood Noel Coward gave a party for her, Barbara Hutton came, with Cary Grant, Olivia. DeHavilland with Stewart. After dinner they began playing the old truth game, and Coward asked the guest of honor the stock question: “Who’s the most romantic man in Hollywood with whom you'd choose to be stranded on a desert island?” Miss Hepburn sald, “Jimmy Stewart.” And Miss DeHavilland didn’t like it a bit.
= z ” DARRYL ZANUCK'’S barber, Sam Silver, has been basking a little too prominently in reflected glory, and it was decided the other day he ought to be deflated a hit. The Little Napoleon takes Sam with him on trips, and has given him some scripts to read for his opinion. Such responsibility has

been too much for Sam to hear quietly, so he has been telling people how close he is to the boss.
So they phoned over to Metro and hired the ribber-actor, Albert Morin, for a day. He was done up in a turban, escorted to the barber shop and introduced to Sam as the Maharaja of Zuleika. Privately, too, Sam was told the fabulously rich
thing if he liked his work. And what could he do for His Royal Highness? Well, a haircut or shave from the hands of an unbeliever would be out of the question,
Sam salaamed and went to work. Morin played it big and yelped in regal fury when the nervous barber clipped too close. Sam gave the toe an apologetic kiss. As he left, Morin dug into a pocket, said, “Here, my nlan,” and gave him a handful of loose jewels. The barber sped downtown to have the stuff appraised, and Morin won't be going back to that shop for a long time. The emeralds and rubies came from the prop department.

Marriage vs. Career Brings New Harpist to Symphony

and blond.
.new harpist this year in the person of Lynne Wainwright. One glance at Miss Wainwright's picture reveals that Mr. Sevitzky is not discouraged on the subject of pretty blond performers on the celestial instrument. And for that the orchestra patrons owe him a debt of gratitude. He realizes that the greater part ‘of an orchestra harpist’s working time is spent, not in playing, but in sitting well down stage and presenting her profile to the audience. And he has never failed to offer his audiences an attractive profile in the harp section. Mr. Sevitzky realizes, too, that the mortality among his harpists is pretty high, as a direct result of these attractive profiles. And further, that this demure object of downstage pulchritude sometimes entices the eye away from the conductor, where it rightfully belongs.
his audience short, nor dec selfish and personal considerations enter into his plan for the more abundant musical life. 2 2 2 MISS WAINRIGHT, like Miss Call, is an Indiana gjrl. Although she was born in Cleveland, she remedied sthat situation quickly by moving With her parents to Indianapolis and attending School 43.
which is the largest in Indianapolis. Because he believes newsreels are vitally important just now, he has arranged for first-run showings of M-G-M and Fox Movietone .newsreels. As his manager Mr. Markun has chosen Robert Hesseldenz, who for nearly 10 years was part owner and manager of the Uptown and once previously was manager of the Ritz. The house will be run on a dous ble feature policy plus the newsreels and a comedy. Daily open=ings will be at 6:45 p. m. with Saturday and Sunday openings at 1:45 p. m. ” ”
The Paramount will begin an early opening policy on Saturday. The box office blinds will be zipped up at 5 p. m. with the first show starting half an ‘hour later. This means patrons may see a complete show as late as 9:45 p. m. on Saturdays. Beginning Sunday Manager Joe Cof-

For its family nights today and tomorrow the Parker is bringing back “Drums Along the Mohawk” with Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert. The Sheridan, too, has a repeat tomorrow through Saturday: “Thunder Afloat” with Wallace Beery.

THUS FAR the old problem of Marriage vs. Career hasn't puzzled the harpists of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra very much. Fabien Sevitzky’s first appointee was Marjorie Call, who was pretty Miss Call married at the end of her first season here. Then came Rebecca Lewis, likewise pretty and blond, who lasted two seasons before giving in to matrimony. So the orchestra is going to have a

IT'S RATHER hard to find an executive around the Jordan Conservatory this week. Miss Ada Bicking, director, and G. V. Carrier, business manager, are touring music schools and other music centers in the East, and will be in Philadelphia tomorrow night for the reception honoring Fabien Sevitzky. Mr. Sevitzky, as you know, is head of the Jordan's orchestra department’ in addition to his orchestral duties. ‘The reception tomorrow night, however, is to honor him upon the 15th ‘anniversary of the Philadelphia: Chamber String Sin-
