today. Robert Montgomery, chairman of the “We the People Commiitee,” which is for Mr. Willkie, challenged Pat O'Brien, chairman of the “Hollywood for Roosevelt” organization, to. a debate over the qualifications of the candidates. Mr. O’Brien was away, but Ralph Block, writer and secretary of the Roosevelt club, accepted. Mr. Montgomery, who is seeking to have the debate broadcast on a national network, will argue for Mr. Willkie. The Roosevelt debater will be selected from a group of prospects which includes Edward G. Robinson, Miriam Hopkins, Rosalind Russell, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Henry Fonda and Walter Huston.

by war. + It is a big and carefuliy-wrought picture. Yet into it Chaplin has managed to inject the same mixture of comedy and tragedy that enthralled his audiences of -the silent screen, It is a two-hour show, and the greater part of it is slap-stick comedy, the pie-throwing, bellyflopping, type of comedy Chaplin originated. Chaplin's own Hitler, Jack Oakie’s Mussolini, Billy Gilbert's Goering, (they are only thinly-disguised) are really funny. But there is tragedy in .it, too. Paulette Goddard, who is Chaplin's wife, as Hannah, Maurice Moscovich as Mr. Jaeckel, Chaplin, this time a little Jewish barber, are the symbols of a people over whom a darkness has fallen. Laughter and ,tears alternate and intermingle with kaleidoscopic speed through ‘an hour and 54 minutes.

Chaplin Holds Premiere Of Tragi-Comic ‘Dictator’
By WILLIAM B. DICKINSON United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (U. P.).—Charlie Chaplin's one-man blitzkrieg — against war and hatred and intolerance had its first showing here last po
Before New York's blase first night crowd, the little man ‘with the | {baggy pants and the postage-stamp mustache unveiled his $2,300,000 moving picture, “The Great Dictator,” acted in protest against a world torn |
the show he wrote, directed, and
Then in the six last climactic min-
|utes, having gripped his audience
with the mastery of his tragi-
comedy, Chaplin holds them spellbound with a powerful plea for freedom ‘and democracy and unity and love. Then Hynkel, dictator of Tomainia, and a little Jewish barber with baggy pants and a derby hat, are not speaking. It is Chaplin appealing for the world he wants. “This is no propaganda picture,” Chaplin said while he waited nervously for its premiere. “I have no thought of carrying a banner. “I'm not anti-anything except the persecution of the small and the weak. - But insanity is insanity and brutality is brutality.” Last night he sat in the rear of the Astor Theater watching the first night audience. It sat for a moment in silence when his picture ended, then burst spontaneously into thunderous applause.

eo Tallulah Carries ° 1 1 1 On in 'Who's Who Tallulah Bankhead, who comes to English’s- Thursday night in Lillian Hellman’s “The Little Foxes,” has accomplished- two services for the Bankhead clan. Not only did she satisfy vicariously the theatrical ambitions of her father, the late William B. Bankhead, Speaker of the House of Representatives, but she became the third generation of a distinguished family to rate inclusion in “Who’s Who.” Her grandfather, Senator John Hollis Bankhead, was often referred to as the “father of good roads” because of his long service as chairman of the Senate’s Post Office and Post Roads Committee. The public career of the late Speaker Bankhead is well known. And there is another member of 'Ithe family "in Congress, Senator John Hollis Bankhead II. A third of Miss Bankhead’s uncles to be found in “Who’s Who” is Henry M. Bankhead, a retired Army colonel and a commercial attache of the United States Legation in Ottawa. Miss Bankhead is the first of the family to invade the theater. But it was only his mother’s strenuous objection to the stage which turned William B. Bankhead from acting to law and a political career.

ROCHESTER, N. Y., Oct. 15 (U. P.). — Wendell L. Willkie today viewed with alarm the country’s future “as a baseball nation.” Twice alluding in speeches here to sundry missiles — tomatoes, boiled potatoes, eggs and the like —that have been tossed at him during his continental stumping tour, the Republican Presidential candidate said: “I am convinced from the number of pitches’ that have been made at me and from the few hits that have been scored that America, as a baseball nation, is on the decline. »
MILLIGAN IS NAMED VOTE INQUIRY CHIEF
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 (U. P.). —Attorney General Robert H. Jackson today appointed Maurice M. Milligan, U. 8. attorney for the Western District of Missouri, to direct a nation-wide investigation of alleged irregularities in this year’s |- Presidential election campaign. Mr. Milligan successfully prosecuted the Kansas City election fraud cases in 1936 and 1938 and the 1939 income tax cases which resulted in the imprisonment of Thomas A.
