RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC

Morrissey Would Permit Driving Le Driving Left of Safety Zones; Other Officials Propose Removal of
Non-Essential Zones. By RICHARD LEWIS
Two methods to untie the downtown rush-hour traffic tangle have been yroposed to the Safety Board which is ex-
pected to act on them Tuesday.
Police Chief Michael F. Morrissey has recommended that motorists be permitted to drive left of safety zones downtown. Other officials have urged removal of safety zones at . Intersections where they are not essential.
NAZI PLOT ON FRENGH PAINTINGS GHARGED
LONDON, Oct. 10 (U. P.).—Hun-
dreds of thousands of dollars worth of * paintings, drawings and other art treasures described as having been. sent abroad in “an obvious German ruse to secure dollar exchange” were seized by British authorities at Bermuda from the American Export Liner Excalibur, the Ministry of Economic Warfare revealed here today. The Ministry said the art treasures seized included 27 paintings by Renoir, 30 by Cezanne, 12 by Gauguin, seven by Degas and also some paintings by Manet, Money and Picasso ‘which originally had been in Paris museums. The Ministry said the consignee of the art shipment was Martin Fabiani, art expert from Paris, who was described as “an expert on customs authorities ” “British authorities had good reason to believe Fabiani was being used as a German agent,” the Min-

officials and members of the Chamber of Commerce's
traffic committee.
Railways officials said they opposed the plan of driving left of] safety zones. They said it would slow up busses, street cars and trackless trolleys. These vehicles carry 170 per cent of the passengers downtown dur-. ing rush hours, according to a Railways survey. The Chief contended, how ever, that in- : stead of being — _ retarded, they Mr. Morrissey would move faster, with a general acceleration in traffic movement. The cartracks would provide an additional lane and bottlenecks at safety zones would disappear, he said. | - Chamber of Commerce committee | members agreed that .safety zones | should ‘be removed only at intersections where passengers would not be exposed to traffic hazards. Safety Board President Leroy J.| Keach, who sat in on the confer- | ence, made no comment on the ad- | visability of both methods, other] than to indicate they will be presented to the Board.

Consider Gas Again
The increased cost of coal has, brought up once more the possibility |
!|of substituting gas as a source of]
power at the Sanitation Plant which | uses most. of the coal the City purchases. It is not city manufactured gas, but methane, a by-product of the sewage disposal process, which is considered. . The gas perpetually bubbles up from the activated sludge ponds at the plant, dissipating into the atmosphere, a total waste. Methane is the gas produced by the breakdown of organic solids: by bacteria. It is prevalent in swamps where it produces that fiery phenomenon popularly known as will-o’-the-wisp.
Heat Value Is High
In the Sanitation Plant process, about 200,000 cubic feet of methane is released every day from the artificial sludge swamps. That if enough

to furnish all the power the Sanitation Plant needs—power now sup- | plied from coal at the rate of 2000 | tons a month. The gas is said to| have a British Thermal Unit heat value almost the equivalent of natural gas. The question of utilizing methane, however, is the expense involved. Sanitation Plant Superintendent | Don Bloodgood has estimated it] would cost the City $1.000,000 to

legs and body. Every meal I forced down caused terrible gas formation which made me so nervous. I could get no restful sleep, and as a result I felt terribly weak and run down. The many medicines I tried failed to help me and I was afraid I'd never feel good any more.
“Retonga’s relief was both prompt and grand. The deficient flow of gastric juices and loss of appetite are relieved, and consequently so are my indigestion, and gas bloating. I eat everything I can get, as the saying goes. Retonga’s laxative effect was mild and satisfactory and I feel better than in years. I think I would be selfish not to tell others suffering as I did about Retonga.” Retonga is a purely vegetable | stomachic medicine, intended to increase the flow of gastric juices in the stomach and help nature remove toxic wastes from the bowels. The Retonga representative at | Hook's Drug Store, S. E. Cor. Illinois and Washington Sts., is ex-! plaining this purely vegetable medicine to scores daily. Indian Test of Draft Hinted
BUFFALO, N. Y., Oct. 10.—(U. P.)—Wilfred Crouse, president of the Seneca Indian nation council on the Salamancia reservation, announced today that the tribe may bring to the courts a case to determine whether Indiana may be drafted into the United States armed forces. “But,” Crouse added, “one of the things that might prevent such a test may be inability to find a Senaca willing to refuse to register for selective service, and run the risk of being considered a draft dodger. “We're objecting to registration of Senacas as a matter of principle and not because we want to avoid doing our duty.”
