Bromfield ‘Chooses Mansfield

. For Premiere of Play. Times Special MANSFIELD, O., Oct. 8. — It's nothing new for a small city, or €ven a crossroads hamlet, to have the world premiere of a movie. But . when the first performance of a new stage play by prominent authors takes place in a city of

40,000 persons, that’s something else again,

But that is what is going to | happen in Mansfield on Dec. 3, | When “Here Today, Gone TomorTow,” a new play by Louis Bromfield and his righthand man and secretary, George Hawkins, has its first production. - Even more unusual is the fact that the play will be done by the Mansfield Community Players, an amateur group with a non-profes- | sional director, Helen Bacon. Al- | though the simon-pures profess no overweening ambitions, they have won considerable recognition in North Central Ohio for their productions during past seasons. It may be that Mr. Bromfield’s | recent experience as a Hollywood screen writer suggested the Hollywood technique of opening his play .in the city of his birth. At any rate, the work has not been written | purely for local consumption. The noted novelist-playwright plans to give it a professional presentation | in the near future, and several film | producers already are reported interested in the screen rights. : | Mr. Bromfield is now completing | a home in the hills outside his native city, and he will be in Mansfield shortly to assist Mrs. Bacon in the casting and direction of the play. ‘Plans are already under way to | present “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” in big time fashion, with visiting celebrities from the East and West coasts, searchlights, flash | bulbs and everything.

The week's most promising boost toward cordial Latin-American relations would seem fo be the appearance of Carmen Miranda (left) and Betty Grable in “Down Argentine Way,” boked for the Indiana Friday. ing rooms are echoing with by-gads and cheerios. Anna Neagle has been having quite a time with her two aunts, intrepid ladies of 68 and 74 who are taking care of the star’s home in England. The place is -seven miles from Hendon and 10 from DeHavilland, both Nazi bombing objectives. Miss Neagle has been trying for months to persuade them to try to come here, or at least to leave the region where they are. She sent a cable several. weeks ago and got this reply: “Sister and I went up to London today. Saw ‘Irene.’ Packed theater, huge crowds. Please make more happy pictures like this. Love.” The Countess of Jersey, a guest-about-Hollywood these days, has had a long letter from David Niven. From a previous widely-circulated story, Movietown figured Capt. Niven was stationed at some training camp near London. The recent letter indicates he's now with the anti-invasion forces on the southeast coast. Anyway, he tells of seeing this sign on a quaint little inn there: “Lodgers Taken. Good Food

the Enemy.” : Fred Astaire has an anecdote. His sister Adele, you know, is Lady Caveridish. And Lord Cavendish, as you prbably didn’t know, is a member of an anti-parachute patrol. Sleeps in his clothes and dashes out at eerie hours to patrol the lanes and beat the woodlands. Before writing to her brother, Lady Cavendish had seen her husband come in at dawn, completely bushed and out of temper, “What did you find?” she asked him. “Lovers!” snorted the nobleman. “Four pairs of lovers! ,.. Damned outrage! . .. An outrage for them, I mean. . . . Hitler shall answer for these violations of British privacy!” The extra situation in Hollywood has been little improyed by honest administration at Central Casting. Previously there were a few hundred favored extras: who at least made a living. Today, with studio jobs meticulously assigned so that each eligible atmosphere player gets his fair share, they're all starving. Everyone knows the answer: There are T7000 extras where there should be no more than 2500. But they won’t quit; they just bleat. If I sound unsympathetic, the following incident will show one reason why: Frank Capra recently sent an order to Central Casting for 2500 $5.50-a-day extras. That's the lowest class; he just wanted a mob scene, a human background. The casting bureau notified all the available ‘$5.50 people, then began telephoning those in the $8.50 bracket. The turndowns were indignant. Central Casting never did get enough players for Capra's mob. Thousands were idle, wouldn't accept a $5.50 job. Capra finally was given permission to hire non-union people off the streets.

E, SIDERS ARGUE PROPOSED BUS. TROLLEY SHIFT

City Council Is Neutral; Approves Fire Department Modernization.

City Councilmen today remained neutral in a dispute among East Side residents over the substitution of trackless trolley service for the E. 10th St. motor bus, a move proposed by Indianapolis Railways, Inc. A crowd which overflowed into the Council’s chamber’s balcony appeared for -a public hearing on the change last night. Councilmen decided to withhold action on the change, approved two weeks ago by the Works Board. Members, meanwhile, approved a $10,000 transfer of funds in the Park Department and authorized expenditure of $125,000 proceeds from bonds for Fire Department modernization and $23.000 bond proceeds to finance the City’s share of the W. Michigan St. bridge over Eagle Cresck. . Rules Suspended

The Park Department transfer was approved under suspension of the rules on the plea of Albert H. Gisler, Park Board vice president. He said it was needed immediately to finance overdue repairs of boulevards. Formerly, WPA labor was used on these projects, he said, but the Board made no provision for a WPA boulevard project this year. Proponents of the bus change pointed to a 3-cent reduction in fare, through the substitution of the T-cent trackless trolley for the 10-cent bus on E. 10th St. Trolley service which now terminates at Olney Ave. would be continued to the City limits at Arlington Ave, according to the proposed change. They also complained of gasoline fumes from the motor busses and said the busses were overcrowded. Among the speakers favoring the plan were C. A. Rochford, 826 N. Bancroft St.; Cecil McConahay, 5021 E. 11th St., and Frank Noll Jr., 1403 N. Gladstone St.

See Safety Hazard

Opposed were Mrs. Estelle Bailey, 926 N. Bancroft St.; Ernest Heberlein 6220 E. 10th St., and W. H. Fisher, 850 N. LaSalle St. They asserted the erection of trackless trolley poles and wire would deteriorate property in the vicinity, that the heavier trolleys would damage the street surface and that the larger trolleys would constitute a safety hazard. In addition, petitions were submitted by the East Side Civic League favoring the change and the North Irvington Civic League opposing it. Council members invited civic league representatives to return to the next meeting and discuss it further. :

NAVY SPEEDS PLANS FOR 2-OCEAN FLEET

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 (U. P). —The Navy speeded negotiations for acquiring 53 merchant marine vessels today to meet the auxiliary needs of a “two ocean” fleet and stepped up mobilization of thousands of reservists to man them. Navy Department sources disclosed that 22 principal auxiliary craft have been purchased or advanced to the final contract stage. These vessels and 31 additional ones will be converted into tenders, oilers, hospital and supply ships. The Navy has $75,000,000 to spend for such ships. The Navy also bought 30 smaller
