CHICAGO, Oct. 8—These are revival days at Minnesota and Northwestern and their -hallelujahs have the favorites jittery as the first

showdown draws near in the Western Conference football campaign. Of major importance is the Minnhesota comeback which has carried the Gophers to victory over Washington and Nebraska, key teams in the Pacific Coast Conference and Big Six. Northwestern's is less convincing, but the possibilities are there and | Ohio State's Big Ten champions | learn for certain this week in the] Bz Ten’s number one game of the ay. | For | |the first time since Bill Decorrevont was important enough to call a press conference to inform the anxious public what college he had decided to honor with his broken field running, Northwestern looks potent. It's 40-to-0 rout of Syracuse last week was not unexbected, but it brought a great lift in morale to the Wildcats. They're as high now as they were deep in the dumps when Oklahoma popped them off in last season’s debut. A gallant showing by Purdue's underpowered Boilermakers against Ohio | State further emphasized Northwestern’s importance in the young conference campaign. It required a field goal by Charley Maag in the! final 19 seconds to bring an Ohio State victory over Purdue, 17 to 14, and Purdue, for all its fight, was reckoned more of an underdog than Northwestern will be against the Bucks. ’ On a good day, Northwestern's ball-handlers, Decorrevont, Don Clawson, Ike Kepford and Red Hahnenstein, can cope with Don Scott, Jim Strausbaugh and Jim Langhurst of Ohio State. It will take a highly keyed Northwestern i however, to out-maneuver

Week-end results kept Minnesota, hio State and Michigan still the itle favorites but temporarily ropped Indiana from consideration, ndiana tied into Texas and pitched Ss many passes as Texas will see ven in the Southwest Conference. he Hoosiers gained everywhere but n payoff territory because of an bsolute lack of running ability and exas won 13 to 6. Wisconsin, after surprising Maruette, 33 to 19, meets Iowa, which pened with a 46-to-0 victory over outh Dakota. This is the only ther Conference game of the week ut the intersectional flavor trong elsewhere. Southern California, victim of two ies in| the Pacific Coast confernce, invades Illinois, Michigan paades its Tommy Harmon at Harard and Indiana travels to Neraska. | Also scheduled are Purdue t Michigan State and outside the conference, Georgia Tech at Notre Dame. Notre Dame was somewhat of a disappointment against College of Pacific, despite its 25 to 7 triumph. . The Irish will be no more than an . even choice to knock off Georgia Tech, which traveled to South Bens last year without benefit of a previous game and barely was nosed out, 17 to 14.

Blocking Being Stressed in Notre Dame, Indiana Camps

Blocking—the first requisite for any good football running attack— is being given chief attention in at least two state college gridiron camps this week. Both Elmer Layden of Notre Dame and Bo McMillin of Indiana found last Saturday that their respective teams were weak in this department and are shaping practice sessions accordingly. Layden lashed out at the varsity yesterday after films of:the Irish’s 25-7 victory over College of the Pacific had been shown and promised his boys “a real licking Saturday” by Georgia“ Tech unless they improve in “aggressiveness, altertness, tackling and blocking.” All Notre Dame players are expected to be ready for the Engineers’ invasion- although fullback

MAJOR baseball owners intend to refuse the use of their parks next fall unless the National League of Professional Football Clubs starts its season later. This is an admission that the diamond campaign is too long, and that competition has become too keen. What the baseball magnates object to more than anything else are all-star gridiron games in late August and early September. They monopolize too much of the free space newspapers have given baseball. Baseball moguls are too dumb to permit newspapers to conduct national polls to determine mem-=-bers of their All-Star teams, and thus obtain unlimited publicity. Original idea was for the all-star baseball show in July to be the fans’ game, but the owners. insisted on turning 3 over to the managers. ” f- ” INITIAL promoters of the biggest all-star football game have been smart enough to let the people have the say in selecting the collegiate side. All-star games have spread and grown in importance. They have done much for professional football. But organized baseball has had

The Chilean attempted to floor Dorazio with a heavy attack during the last three rounds but Dorazio finished on his feet. Godoy, the 2-1 favorite, weighed 202 while -Dorazio scaled 194.

OAKLAND, Cal, Oct. 8 (U.P.).

Vitt said he would not know his status until the Cleveland board of directors meets. He did not discuss the dissension among his players which led them to demand his discharge in mid-season. He remarked, howe ever, that the “fans really stuck with me.”

PRESIDENT RETURNS T0 DESK IN CAPITAL

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 (U. P.).— President Roosevelt returned to Washington today to sign the $1,000,000,000 excess profits tax bill and complete the machinery for conscription. In three days, Mr. Roosevelt planned to clear his desk of the tax bill, the $1,500,000,000 appropriation bill providing funds to finance conscription, and regulations governing exemptions under the draft law. In that time, he may send to the Senate the nomination of a director of selective service. The President leaves Washington Thursday night for a tour through Pennsylvania and Ohio, which may be critical in next month’s Presidential election. Like his tour through upstate New York which Mr. Roosevelt completed at Albany, N. Y., last night, the trip will be listed by his aides as “non-political.” But its timing, like that of the New York swing, indicated Mr. Roosevelt was gradually stepping up his campaign for a third term through the politically unique formula of inspection tours in pollitically pivotal states. .His speech at Dayton, O., Saturday may well become his major effort of the campaign.

HALLEGK OPPOSED T0 ADJOURNMENT

Times Special : WASHINGTON, Oct. 8. — Rep. Charles A. Halleck (R. Ind.) has returned to the House to help the Republican fight against Congressional adjournment. He made the Western trip on the Willkie campaign train and left the G. O. P. Presidential nominee only after his Philadelphia appearance last week. Rep. Halleck then returned for a speech in his own Second . District in Indiana. Yesterday he predicted an easy victory for himself, and that the entire Republican ticket will carry in the state. He also was optimistic about Wendell L. Willkie’s chances to be elected President. “The Gallup Poll is weeks behind the country,” Rep. Halleck said. “The fact that Rep. Bruce Barton is running for the Senate as the Republican nominee in New York State
