i Aids British Planes to Bring Down Nazis eames By ROGER BUDROW
MUCH OF THE CREDIT FOR BRITISH VICTORIES in the air is due to American research, according to an article in the Hoosier Independent, publication of the Indiana Independent Petroleum Association. : British pursuit planes are using a high-octane gasoline developed by U. S. companies and made either in this country or in British refineries with American technical aid.
Gasoline is rated according to its “octane number,” which is a measure of antiknock value. When explosive mixtures are
highly com-|.
pressed they detonate spontaneously and prematurely, whereupon there is what is called “knocking.” Air speeds of 250, 300 and 400 miles an hour are impossible with a gasoline that cannot stand high compression. Germany's best aviation gasoline Is reported to be one obtained b#

” ” 2 That new Aldrich Family character, Herbert, represents the end of a quest that has been going on ever since the comedy serial went-on the air. Clifford Goldsmith, the author, had been hunting an actor old enough to be past change of voice but with a voice that sounded as if it were changing—and changing on the funny side. Also it had to be in contrast with the voice of Ezra Stone. . Goldsmith’s secretary, Doris Town- - send, suggested a funny - voiced friend she had in Philadelphia. He wasn't an actor; he was a brush salesman, but maybe he could be taught to act. So 24-year-old Herbert Lend was auditioned and Goldsmith whispered “Eureka.” His troubles in that direction seemed over but they began again the day the new actor drew his first . pay check, “Now that I have some money,” he remarked to Goldsmith, “I'm certainly going to a doctor to ° have something done about this throat of mine. I have a doctor who told me a small operation could fix my voice.” .
