Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Oct. 5.—The war is striking hammer blows at Canadian pocketbooks. But at the same time many Canadians are enjoying an unaccustomed prosperity. It is estimated, for instance, that dividends to be paid by Canadian corporations this month will be the highest in history, about 77 per cent greater than in October, 1939. Much of that money will ke drained from the shareholders, however, by increased taxes. Skilled workmen, although subject to various new taxes, nevertheless in many cases have more to | spend than before the war. :

of’ an Argos, * The “staff” consisted of the parttime attention of M. L. Corey, the hardware dealer, who served as the organization's secretary. Today the association leased 5000 square feet of floor spase on the third floor of the Architects & Builders Building through Klein & Kuhn, Inc. The organization has been here since 1924. Rivers Peterson, managing di- | rector, said the new quarters were necessary because of “the tremendous :iscrease in our service to the 36 state and sectional asSociations which are affiliated with us.” The new offices will be ready by Monday. Extensive alterations have been in progress for 60 days. The modernized offices include secretary and director's rooms of walnut paneling with glass block inserts, nine offices for the executive staff and a suite for the use of the | association members, ment and facilities also were installed for production and distribution of the “Hardware Retailers” the industry's publication for 20,~ 000 hardware men. WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (U. P.).—

theoretically, $500,000-a-year man in Saskatchewan or Alberta would actually pay more than $500,000 in taxes. Actually,!it is said there are no incomes of such size in those provinces, but ‘in any event the high-bracket incomes are hard hit. Besides income tax, there is a special national-defense tax of 2 per cent of fotal income on married persons whose income exceeds $1200, of 2 percent on single persons with incomes of $600 to $1200, and 3 per cent on single persons with incomes above $1200. Special Taxes Added Then there are such .items as these: War exchange tax—a. flat 10 per cent on all imports from non-Em-pire countries. Sales tax on new cars—10 per cent on the first $700, 20 per cent on | the next $200. 40 per cent on the next $300. and 80 per cent on everything above that. Excess-profits tax—75 per cent of all increased profits over those in a base period, or 12 per cent of total { profits (whichever is greater). Since the ordinary corporation income tax is 18 per cent, this makes a minimum tax on ‘corporation profits of 30 per cent. There are special taxes on radios, cameras and phonographs, and increased taxes on tobacco, tires and tubes. (The tax on cigarets is now about 15 cent each; a pack of 20 costs a quarter.) The 8 per cent Federal sales tax has ‘not been changed. Gasoline taxes, running up to 10 cents a Canadian gallon, are levied by the provinces. As in America in the last war, there are savings certificates and stamps in such denominations that even the smallest income can be tapped. More controls,

|

and more taxes, appear inevitable, :
