Football Coach
: While reviewing last Saturday’s results, I glanced at this week-end’s card of major collegiate football and decided it would be tough picking. “A more careful survey of the record reveals only one game which I consider a toss-up. I-had to reach into the hat to put Tennessee over Duke, but favorites in the rest of the games seem fairly well defined.
So watch out—upsets aheadd
To defeat Washington, 1914, Minnesota had to have the breaks and displayed vulnerability on the ground and in the air which Nebraska has the backs to take advantage of. Hense, I take the Cornhuskers.
The unexpected ease with which Michigan conquered California might touch the Wolverines with selfsufficiency. The long trip, made by airplane, might have taken a slight toll. But, without minimizing the fact that Michigan = State will be improved over last year and will be selling out as always in this RR game, Michigan Elmer Layden still should win. You can’t believe all you read in the papers when they tell the world how wonderful you are. I think the Southern California Trojans had a healthful dose of that old, old lesson when Washington State's Cougars clawed them back to reality with a 14-14 tie. On the record the Trojans have reason to respect Oregon State more than they did Washington State. This combination of factors makes Southern Cal my choice over the Beavers. While we're on the Pacific Coast we may as well dispose of the other major engagements. U.C L.A looked stronger against Southern Methodist than I expected, but Santa Clara’s smoother, tighter ofiense, and shifting defenses will be too

much for the Uclans. Stanford, inspirited by an impressive first game under new management, is my pick over Oregon. St. Mary’s victory over highly touted Gonzaga gives the Gaels the nod over California, despite the fact that the Golden Bears may come up fighting as a result of their smarting rout by Michigan. The 1840 debut of Cornell is an event in itself. Added interest is provided by Andy Kerr's Red Raiders of Colgate, about whom there is coniderable speculation. Some say this is Andy Kerr’s year in the East. Be it remembered also that Cornell beat Colgate last year only by the margin of two kicks after touchdown. But a senior team which was almost tops nationally last year has the whiphand over brilliant sophomores. If anything upsets the dope cart it will be senioritis, a football form of self-satisfaction. Purdue is the best long-shot of the day, I think, but still a long-shot, so I must pick Ohio State. If the Boilermakers surprise, it will be speed, passes, and spirit that turn the trick. I don’t figure the Buckeyes will take this game lightly in spite of their paper superiority. They must remember the 12-0 disappointment the Boilermakers dealt them the last time they met. Duquesne has the best team in Pittsburgh, so they say. It’s a little early to make such a commitment. Carnegie Tech is yet to be tested— the Geneva game (21-0 Carnegie), did not reveal much. Pitt, in spite of a pretty thorough lacing by Ohio State, commands respect for its potentiality. While both Duquesne and Carnegie take the week-end. off, I think the Panthers will have enough stuff to beat Missouri, especially if they realize that Paul Christman is not as good a runner as he is a passer and develop their defense accordingly. To win, however, the Panthers will need at least two, even three touchdowns.
He Likes the Badgers
A game to watch is the annual Wisconsin-Marquette affair. I'm taking Harry Stuhldreher’s optimism at its face value when I pick the Badgers to beat the Hilltoppers, for the prospects at Milwaukee are bright, too. If Wisconsin wins this ‘one impressively, there’s trouble in store for Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, and Minnesota. Yes— that’s what Stuhldreher is up against in the conference. The week-end doings at Bloomington, Ind.,, may likewise tell a season's story. Bo McMillin is frank about his 1940 set-up—the best since he’s been at Indiana. The Hoosiers are meeting the Texas Longhorns, who have some high hopes of their own which are much encouraged by 'trouncing Colorado, Rocky champs, last week. Indiana was only a point or two from victory in every game but one last year. On percentage at least Bo's boys should come through, beginning with the Texas game. A couplé of new brooms get first rate trials in the East Saturday when Temple meets Georgetown and West Virginia takes on Fordham. The Rams will be too tough for Bill Kern's Mountaineers, but Ray Morrison, the new foreman at Temple, should snap Georgetown’s long winning string. The Owls lost only by a shade last year (3-2), and Morrison’s open game, which eight returning regulars ought to grasp reasonably well, will undo the Hoyas.
Loyola Is Mystery Team
The mystery team of the year is Loyola of the West—it’s a mystery even to its own coach. Marty Brill didn’t take over until this fall, and his first game is against competition with which he is equally unfamiliar inasmuch as he has been doing his oaching on the other side of the continent. No matter what unknown wonders Marty may have accomplished in a short time, Texas Tech should win in stride. The element of doubt and special national interest does not seem to be present to any considerable degree in other games of the weekend. The rest of my selections therefore, are- made without comment, with one exception. Notre Dame is opening the season with the College of the Pacific. Pacific's 6-0 upset of California last year should not be underestimated in the light of California’s crushing conquest by Michigan this fall. The 1939 California team lost to Southern California, four touchdowns to one, it's true. But we scored only two touchdown on the Trojans and they scored on us three times. California wound up the season with a 32-7 rout of Stanford. On the record as a whole, there’s no doubt that we should win this game from California’s conquerors.
