HOUSING PLANS MADE FOR FORT
$290,000 Barracks on Way: 35 Homes to Be Built In Lawrence.
Two new large housing projects have been planned for Ft. Harrison in the Army’s program to prepare the post as a luge reception center for draftees. One project calls for the construction of 35 low-cost dwellings in the
men’s families. A The other will involve the construction of 34 new semi-permanent barracks and administrative buildings to house a part of a National Guard regiment scheduled to come to the reservation soon. These two projects have been added to the original program, now being carried out, to construct a $250,000 draftee reception center on post grounds. ‘Orphan’ Guard Coming The barracks for partial housing of the National Guard unit will cost about $290,000. The 201st Infantry, an “orphan” Guard regiment from West Virginia has been assigned to replace the 11th Infantry at Ft. Harrison. The latter unit is scheduled to go Camp Custer, Mich. to join the regular Fifth Division. The 201st Infantry maintains a strength of about 115 officers and 2660 men. The new barracks will house about 1000 men. The balance of the regiment will occupy precent permanent barracks. The low-cost dwellings are to be constructed by the Public Building Administration, a division of the Federal Housing Administration. Cost of the project has not been announced. Maj. Gen. Joseph Cummins, post commander, is to confer with representaflives of the housing agency on location for the homes. Bids for the construction of the $250,000 reception center were opened at Ft. Harrison yesterday. Those entering bids were William P. Jungclaus Co. J. L. Simmons Co. and Pearson Construction Co. Plans for the center call for construction of 20 cantonment-type barracks to. house 1000 draftees, in addition to construction of a mess hall, hospital and other administrative buildings.

THE DE SOTO—
Fluid drive with “Simplimatic Transmission” heads the list of DeSoto improvements. In support of a claim that the transmission is
ing pleasure since the self-starter,” DeSoto is telling the public to “drive all day without shifting or declutching.” In its “rocket styling,” the entire car has been lowered by one and one-half inches without any loss of head room. The overall length has been increased 5% inches and bodies widened by 2! inches, giving the new car a racy appearance.
Rear Window Larger
The rear window is 47.5 per cent, larger than last year. The luggage locker lid has counter-balanced hinges requiring no supporting arm. The lockers are lighted and carpeted and carry the spare wheel vertically on the right side so luggage need not be moved to remove the wheel. Upholstery, instrument panel and interior hardware have been given two-tone treatment in the ’41 Custom DeSotos. Both the DgLuxe and Custom bodies have more seat and leg room. Sedan rear seats have arm rests deeply recessed into the body, and in.certain Custom body types a center arm rest is regulation equipment. A choice between pile fabric and broadcloth upholstery is offered in both the DeLuxe and Custom models, and bolster-type cushions are an added item in the Custom line. Featured on the list of mechanical improvements is an exclusive Chrysler Corp. development called “Safety Rim.” DeSoto engineers say it prevents a punctured tire from being thrown off the rim and makes it possible to drive at 50 or 60 miles an hour on a tire without air. Available as extras are front and rear directional signals.
Engine Improved
DeSoto’s 105-horsepower, high compression engine has been improved, Chrysler engineers say, with a new type of bearing for crankshaft which they contend has a
the former type. Superfinish continues to be.an important factor in 13 places in this year’s car, reducing friction and contributing to longer life. An oil bath air cleaner has been made standard equipment and the battery has been placed under the hood for greater convenience, Added to the Custom line is a four-door Town Sedan with rear doors opening forward; a brougham with flipper windows in the rear to provide back-seat ventilation, and a club coupe with full width rear seats and considerably increased leg room for back seat passengers. Other Custom body types are the four-door (six window) sedan; sev-en-passenger sedan; limousine, business coupe and convertible club coupe. In the DeLuxe line is a four-door sedan, two-door sedan, seven-pas-senger sedan, coupe and club coupe.

THE CADILLAC—
In a year of higher manufacturing costs, Cadillac has lowered base prices. For 1941, all Cadillac interiors are trimmed by the Fleetwood Custom Body Division of (ieneral Motors. :
Lower and longer than a year ago, the 1941 series reflects the modernistic influence in design. New to the line are the Series Sixty-one, Sixtythree and Sixty-seven. Series Sixtytwo, Sixty Special and Seventy-five are continued.
’ Each of the series is powered by a V-8 engine, redesigned to ‘boost the ) Greater gas mileage is claimed by refinements that improve axles, carburetion and power production. The hood lines have been revised. Hood side panels have been eliminated, and the broad, low hood has been rounded to rest on | fender “bridges,” adding to the streamlining of the new bodies.
Fenders Strengthened Fenders are longer, bullet-shaped
recesses for a newly developed fog lamp. A massive. checker-board grille, with built-in turn indicators, extends beneath the hood to deep, heavy bumpers, curved to Protect fenders. | Three fans and three radiators (two under the front seat), comprise the heating system. The driver regulates the car’s interior temperature with an instrument panel control.
