Three times the Cardinals have gone to the post, and three times they've lost—but it has been to Such wrecking crews as Anderson, Tech and Shortridge. They figure now that future competition may be more to their liking and theyre ready to give their foes the worst. Now about Cupid and national defense. When graduation stole from Southport such 1939 aces as Ed Schienbein, halfback; Stewart Kesterson, halfback: Leon Roquet, tackle, and Morton Higgins, quarterback, Coach Walter Floyd found Didn’t he have at least six other regulars returning for thel current camPpaign? But by the end lof the summer, all was not so rosy. Bill Knuckles and Red Croas, a pair of sweet ends, had joined the Marines during vacation. Another lineman quit school to marry, and two. others decided to cut their educations short. ° That left Coach Floyd exactly one regular as the nucleus for a new team. All available players on the second team were promoted; talent scouts raided the physical education classes. And now the Southport board of | strategy believes that all possible material in the school is in uniform, But Lester Tabor, the one 1939 regular, still has his hands full. Tabor was moved from tackle to quarterback and entrusted with the signal-calling, some running, lots of blocking and most of the kicking. Bobby Dillow and Chester Robbins, a pair of seniors, were put in the halfback slots, and George Bridges, a sophomore, was named fullback. Bridges, who does most of the passing, will be one of those Floyd expects to use in rebuilding for ’41—unless he falls in love or enlists. By removing Tabor from the line, Floyd started from scratch up there. His one returning veteran was Glenn Chew, who won a letter at tackle last season, but saw little first-string service. Around him were placed: three juniors and three sophomores— more insurance for 1941. The regular ends are Harold Dailey and Dick Blank; the tackles, Chew and Ray Hauser; the guards, Frank Burch and Don * Ashman, and the center, Pete Blankenship. There are only 137 pounds of Mr. Blank, but he's a capable wingman. and a hawk at pulling in Bridges’ passes. Another mite is Leonard Griesmer, a back who is being held in reserve until he gets more padding around his bones. You might also tab for future reference one Bernie Hiatt, 8 sophomore guard. Southport was one of the first teams to open its season in these parts, but the Cardinals bowed, 6-0, to Anderson in their opener. A week later they found Tech too , bulky and yielded again, 26-0. Last | Friday they were humbled by Shorizydge, 47-0.

Times Special AUSTIN, Tex.. Oct. 1.—=With only two more days of practice before invading Indiana, the University of
Texas Longhorns rushed preparations today to stop the famed Hoosier back, Hal Hursh, when the two teams meet in Bloomingfon Saturday. Gratified with their pass defense which kept Colorado from complefing a single throw, the Texans appeared confident that they can stop Indian«’s aerial blitzkrieg. Cowboy Jack Crain, Texas ace ball carier, appeared at practice yesterday, showing little effect of his injury received last Saturday. Pleased with the showing of his sophomores Coach Dana X, Bible promoted Ralph Park, 175-pound third-stringer, to right half, replacing Letterman Noble: Doss. Back onto the first team went squat, 215pound tackle Don Williams who was pushed out of the starting lineup by Bo Cohenour, a reserve tackle. The Longhorns have stronger reserves than any time in the past decade. Three teams played in Saturday's game, each one looking as strong'as the other. “It does not weaken the team when we substitute, as it did two or three years back,” commented Coach Bible.
Cobb Lewis Back on ‘The Job at I. U.
Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Ind, Oct. 1.— Halfback Cobb Lewis, benched recently with an injury. was back on the job today as Indiana University’s football forces sharpened up their aerial attack and pass -defense. The Hoosiers open. their season here Saturday against Texas. Aerial rehearsals yesterday were centered around Hal Hursh, who is recovering from a leg injury. Chief reason for the stress on pass defense was Scout, Paul Harirell's report that Texas gained more | than 200 yards -through the air when the Steers won their opener last Saturday against Colorado, 39 to 7.

‘Speed’ Is Purdue Watchword; Texas Maps Anti-Hursh Attack
Times Special LAFAYETTE, Ind. Oct. 1.—Speed is the watchword in the Purdue football camp this week as the Boilermakers tune for their Big Ten opener Saturday against Ohio State at Columbus. Coach Mal Elward pointed out that if dreams of an upset are to come true, the Boilermaker backs
high gear against the heavy Buckeye line, Today’s practice was expected to be centered on defense again with the second-stringers running Ohio State's payoff formations against the varsity. Word reaching here from Columbus has it that the Buckeyes are working at night under the lights in preparing for Purdué, trying their offensive maneuvers against Purdue defense. Jim Straussbaugh will be ready for action by Saturday.

In Indiana there's nothing like being first in basketball. And so today, even before a lot of football teams have had their opening “breathers,” three local organizations announced they're going on the hardwood standard very shortly. The Bush-Feezle Association announced that it would have no less than nine leagues in the field and G. Engelhardt disclosed that “popular demand” has prompted him to stage the “second annual warmup tournament.” This affair is to get under way at the Pennsy Gym a week from tomorrow. Tennessee and Duke Get Top Billing Winner May Be Headed For U. S. Title
By HENRY SUPER
United Press Staff" Correspondent NEW YORK, Oct. 1.—The .football capital of America this weekend will be Knoxville, Tenn., where the first crucial game of the 1940 football season—one which will have an important bearing in the
—will be played. It’s Tennessee, unbeaten last year except by Southern California in the Rose Bowl, against Duke’s Blue
Devils, reported to be, one of the mighty - teams. of this| campaign. Duke, with a wealth of reserves, is expected to be the favorite and the word from Durham, N. C., is that the citizens already are betting that the Blue Devils will win by two touchdowns. The team which wins this battle conceivably can go undefeated this year and lay a strong claim to the national title and get a spet in one of the New Year's Day bowl games. Although this is the No. 1 game of the day, each section of the country has conference or intersectional battles that will produce plenty of fireworks. And a few more great names probably will be added to the list of defeated teams that was started off in great fashion last week With such names as Tulane, North Carolina, Louisiana State, Washington and U. C. L. A- * Some of the teams which are expected to be good this year have their first starts this week. Cornell, unbeaten in 1939, tees off against a tough customer in Colgate. Notre Dame opens against College of the Pacific and before you laugh at that one think back to last year’s opening day when this - little school, coached by old Amos Alonzo Stagg, knocked over mighty California, Northwestern takes on Syracuse. The Midwest has a flock of good games, chief of which is° Minnesota, apparently off to a good year, against Nebraska, Big Six favorite which opens up this week. Indiana plays Texas in an intersectional game and Ohio State, defending Big Ten chantpion, meets Purdue in a Michigan plays Michigan State and Wisconsin opens against Marquette.
