Field Day With Autographs
.
Fox 1 very movie T, hired for the crowd shots run around | barefoot, in calico and overalls and tattered straw hats —and| ask for autographs. It beats ‘hounding a premiere; they can catch Henry Fonda, Linda Darnell, Dorothy - Lamour and Jane Darwell. Easiest to catch is Miss Darwell, the Fat Lady who waddles around or mostly sits sweltering - under huge [cotton batting pads and bredicting unhappily that she won't [lose an ounce. The wardrobe department started her costume with a suit of heavy woollies, then stitched on rolls of cotton, inches thick, and covered it with another suit. | " 8 EBUT MISS DARWELL'S suffering is alleviated somewhat by knowing she looks genuine. One of the| clowns, telling some circus anecdote between scenes, said to her, “| . so then he made an offer to Lulu—you remember Lulu?” Miss Darwell said no, she didn't | remember Lulu. “You don't?!’ asked the joey in surprise. | “Well, you know Marie, anyway. Fine woman, Marie; she was with the outfit for years until she began to lose so much weight! Miss Darwell didn't know | Marie, either, and finally explained that she never had been in .a dircus. - All the half dozen joeys in the cast are real ones. Harry Bayfield was with circuses for years until he began training animals for Harold Lloyd. Larry Valli, whose| card identifies him as Bozo the Progical Fun House Clown, was orphaned with a circus and at 11 was doing cartwheels and walkdrounds with Ringling. He stays out here all the time now. working in pictures and at the Venice amusement pier and entertaining kids in hospitals and orphanages. and even lecturing in

All clowns are like that, no matter how old they get, Bozo said, because they wear that white makeup so much of the time. It’s cold cream and powdered zinc oxide, in case anyone wants to try it, and he removes it with olive oil. Except for the clowns there are no real performers in the cast, though Linda Darnell does amazingly well as a bareback rider. Dorothy Lamour, as the other ‘feminine lead, doesn’t ride well at all. After being bitten, by chimpanzees, made seasick by elephants and frightened by alligators, a python and a tiger in other pictures, she apparently is a little fed up with having to. work with .animals. | ” 2 ” THEY'VE GOT a lion for this show, but|they don’t always have to have him on the set. A couple of sound-effects men have rigged up a wastebasket and a rosined string like the Halloween contraptions made by kids, and it does the off-stage roaring. The sound men said the most fun they ever had with the roaring machine was during the filming of “Stanley and Livingstone.” Walter Brennan had a scene in the synthetic jungle ending with nervously,’ “Them lions is gettin’ nearer an’ nearer!” At | let go a couple of har- | with the wastebasket hind = him. JAGGER TO AVOID STAGE HENCEFORTH
Times Special 3 HOLLYWOOD, Oct, 1. — Dean Jagger, the movies’ Brigham Young, agreed this week to forego all plays on Broadway. When 20th Century-Fox signed the former Hoosier last April, he insisted that the contract give him permission to return to New York for one play each winter with his movie making confined mostly to summers. After his performance in “Brigham Young,” the studio persuaded
Mr. Jagger to forego the stage and sign a new contract which puts him at the studio’s call 12 months of the year. His first picture under the new set-up will be Zane Grey's “Western Union.”

Old Records Rej uvenated
Wex Cylinders. of of 40 Years
Ago Are Modernized. By EMILY C. DAVIS
Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Oct. 1—In a preview in a tiny, crowded room at the Library of Congress today, engineers demonstrated that they can at last rejuvenate wax cylinder
phonograph records of 40 years ago. Not merely have they found a way to play safely thousands of
(frail cylinders on which scientists
hopefully recorded folk music and primitive songs-—and then stored the records away silent, afraid to play them even once—but the engineers have succeeded in making the music sound as it really was sung 40 years ago, not the way the old tin-horn phonograph hoarsely croaked it out. Among keenly interested participants in the demonstration was Percy Grainger, noted composer and pianist. Nearly 300 cylinder records of folk music from all over the world, which Mr, Grainger himself recorded, about 1905 to 1908, will be transcribed to launch the Library of Congress’ new task of making old and silent records hearable. Mr. Grainger has kept his records unplayed. The new machine is an invention from the Philco Co.'s laboratories. The machine represents another job found for the now familiar electric eye, or phota-electric cell. The photo-electric pick-up is placed on a standard dictaphone machine, replacing original equipment. ‘The standard spindle is changed tor one that will fit the commercial type of old Edishon wax cylinder. The pho-to-electric pick-up is in turn connected to a Philco Home Recorder. Sound from the wax cylinder can thus be transcribed from - the
ord. Instead of the usual phonograph needle the device has a sapphire stylus which needs only to float gently in the grooves. As it does this, it sways a tiny mirror from six to seven thousandths of an inch thick. This mirror reflects light rays, directed on it by a tiny bulb, onto a photo-electric cell. The cell translates thé light rays into energy which séts up the sound vibrations. The new device reveals vividly that the weak feature of oldfashioned scratchy, gurgling phonograph music was due, not to the recording itself, but to the reproducing machine.

NEW CASTLE. Ind, Oct. 1 X P.). — Federal officials say that there’s going to be a new airport at New Castle, but it’s a surprise to local officials. When advised that a grant of
$160,000 was available for construction of the airport, city officials immediately started an investigation to discover what would be done. Floyd Hutchison, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, said that a survey was made for a possible airport location recently, but that nothing happened. He said he would check authorities of the Civil Aeronautics Authority to secure more information about the projected field.

CREDIT EASING FOR BRITISH PROTESTED
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 (U. P.).— A bitter Senate fight was promised today over a proposal to provide
The proposal, which would lift the Johnson Act that prohibits loans to nations which defaulted on their. World War debts, was introduced by Senator William H. King (D. Utah), who has been defeated for renomination, Senator King presented a resolution which would scale down Britain's World War debt, authorize the President to loan money to Britain through the Export-Import Bank, and give the President authority to negotiate for British island bases in the Pacific. His resolution provided for a waiving of the Johnson Act and of the section of the Neutrality Act prohibiting loans to belligerents, insofar as they apply to Great Britain.
F.D.R. Emblems Sent to G.O.P.
DEMOCRATS who want a fresh supply of Roosevelt campaign emblems can find them at the headquarters of the Irvington Republican Club, 5446 E. Washington St. But they'd better hurry, because the club is semi-officially on record as favoring using them as furnace kindling. Through a shipping error, a New York novelly company sent a gross of Democratic emblems to the Republican club here. The company, admitting the mistake, did not ask the local club to send them back but instead asked the members to consider purchasing a similar batch of emblems with “Willkie Boosters” slogans on them. The offer is still under advitement. The question of what to do with the Roosevelt emblems is still up in the air.
