There| is nothing wrong with the Riverwood High School Band exSept the kind of music it plays and Hickey Rooney does something about hat in “Strike Up the Band,” featured at Loew's this week. From a “corny brass band,” swihg-loving Mickey converts the high school’s orchestra into a swinging, jiving melody of hot and cold notes. | Full of fun, music and creating a|“I-wish-I-was-back-in high-school” feeling, the picture has all tliis and | Judy Garland. too. Judy helps him in his career ‘and—wonder of wonders—Paul Whiteman comes to town to play for the birthday party of siren Barbara, Whiteman and the band retire for refreshments and before they . are back Mickey and his gang are trying to melt the instruments with their own version of swing. Tmpressed, Whiteman chooses the ~ band as one of four to compete in a Chicago| broadcast. Many difficulties face the boys before they! can finance the trip. They make it, however, win the contest and the story ends in a blaze of glory for Mickey, his band, and torch singing Judy. One of the best camera tricks ou} of the film capital in many an A, B and C picture is Mickey's placing on a table an orchestra represented by plums, pears and layer cake. Coming alive, the plums, pears and cake become tiny musicians who follow directions of Mickey's wand. What must have been a headache to both mechanics and cameramen is a high spot in the picture. “The Secret Seven” is partner to “Strike Up| the Band” at Loew's this week [and stars Florence Rice, Bruce Bennett, and Barton MacLane.—(T. Deanna Durbin has done it again. “Spring Parade” is as gay and lilting as a Strauss waltz. Like each of her seven previous pictures, “Spring Parade” is splendidly cast, heautifully photographed and expertly directed. It is as life at 17—joyous, light-hearted, overflowing with dancing, laughter and song.

Perhaps bw that Deanna has grown up (you may be surprised how much s0) other more suitable vehicles will be found for her. (Particularly skillful performances are given by S. Z. Minor in scope but major in their effectiveness are the portrayals by Mischa Auer, who has| the role of a peasant; Butch and| Buddy, the baker's nephews, and Franklin Pangborn as a court favorite.
