CANYON CONQUERED BY RACING PIGEONS

PRESCOTT, Ariz, Sept. 27 (U. P.).—Pigeon fanciers finally have proved that carrier pigeons can fly from the bottom of the Grand Canyon despite the treacherous wind currents in the mile deep gorge. Last year, an attempt was made to hold a “Pigeon Derby” from the bottom of the Canyon to Prescott. There were six starters. Five never were seen again. The sixth was carried from the bottom of the Canyon on a miile. This year, however; there were 25 starters and a ma jority of the birds reached their cotes at Pres-

Fords Are Bigger and More

Comfortable; Mercury Longer. The 1941 “classes” of Fords, Pack-

ards and Mercurys are on display in

Indianapolis showrooms today. In each of the models there are innovations in beauty, style and technical construction to catch the eye of the prospective buyer and those interested ‘spectators’ {fascinated by new cars.

Ford—

Starting off with a considerable §

increase in size for the Ford V-8’s, §

DeLuxe and Super DeLuxe, there §

are many changes in the new Fords. Engineers have taken full advantage of increased wheelbase and overall lengths to give added spaciousness. Ford engineers have

worked right up from bigger, tires

through to luxury seat cushions and new softer springs for more riding comfort. Running boards have practically disappeared from sight due to the width of the new bodies. But they are there to step off when doors are opened. In addition to both exterior and interior, beauty Ford engineers strove for improved riding comfort in all 1941 models. The new riding comfort starts with two inches longer wheelbase and a new elec-

The structure is more rigid and mounted on rubber cushions bring quieter service. 1 The springs, front and rear, with increased length, have a balanced action to eliminate any “pitching” and give an easier ride. The rear seat cushions are two inches farther ahead of the rear spring and axle, adding further to riding qualities. The four-lever type shock absorbers have a morg sensitive adjustment to match the softer acting springs. The new Fords have 12-inch hydraulic ‘brakes for quick, smooth action and long service. The emergency or parking brake is on the rear wheels and operated by a steel cable. The brake lever is under the instrument panel at the left of the driver. | There are four body types in the DeLuxe | line, six in the Super DeLuxe. There are three color choices for the DeLuxe and six in the Super DeLuxe line.

Packard—

Sensitive to beauty and allergic to style, the Packard Motor Car Co. this year presents five complete lines. From" the newly-designated OneTen Special and One-Ten DeLuxe through the One-Twenty and OneSixty and One-Eighty, Packard has re-styled to meet the demand for streamlines and harmonious color combinations. New from bumper to bumper, the 1941 Packard |exterior presents a combination of streamlines. molded fenders, recessed ‘headlights, restyled rear section, chrome-trimmed body and {fender .moldings and two-tone body! color combinations. There are many new features mechanically. They include Full mechanical refrigeration cooling system, operating on the same principle as household refrigeration. Nazis Say Army 'Walks' on Sea

BERLIN, Sept. 27 (U. P.).—An army of “super-soldiers,” trained secretly to lead an invasion of Great Britain, has been posted along the English Channel, the North Sea and the Atlantic ready to strike when—and if—the invasion order is given, semi-official sources asserted today. The secret army, made up so far as possible of unmarried men less than 23 years old, is strengthened by a special corps of tens of thousands of marines and infantrymen trained io use ‘water skis” of cork, by means of which they can slide over the water at 5: miles an hour, the sources said. In recent days German sources have reported possession of superbombs, super-airplane. apparatus by means of which plane crews may see through clouds and: fog, super-long range cannon to fire at interior England including London from across the channel, and . a super-firing device which permits accuracy within a one to 10,000 ratio.)

ASKS LAKE DIVERSION

CHICAGO, Sept. 27 (U. P).—C. K. Calvert, purification superintendent of the Indianapolis Water Co., today recommended increased diversion of water from Lake Michigan to the Illinois Waterway, used as a sewage disposal canal by Chicago. Mr. Calvert ‘testified before Special Master Monte M. Lehmann, New Orleans. appointed by the U. S. Supreme Court to hear Illinois’ petition to increase lake water diversion from 1500 to 5000 cubic feet per sec= ond until Jan. 1, 1943. Mr. Calvert said the use of [chlorine gave ‘only temporary |relief” from sewage nuisance and was not a substitute] for proper treatment of sewage matter. He recommended an increase of lake diversion to provide a more efficient diluting agent and elimination of sludge’ ejection into the canal. The Illinois petition is being opposed by the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New| York, Ohio and Minnesota. The |states claim any Inwering of the Lake Michigan water level will endanger navigation and lower the value of shipping and lakeside property.

now inclosed within the steering column housing. Two - speed electric windshield wiper on the One-Ten and OneTwenty models. Offered again as optional equipment is Packard's overdrive, rechristened aero-drive. This unit features an electrical control system with a governor which acts to cut in or out of overdrive at a srved of approximately 21 miles an! hour. The cutout permits the use of aero-drive under practically all city driving conditions without resorting to the manually-controlled cutout. Lower floors are again the" vogue. From a mechanical standpoint, engines on the 1941 Packard editions are basically unchanged.

Mercury—

A longer, bigger, easier-riding, faster accelerating Mercury is presented. - The Mercury now has a two-inch longer wheelbase with spring base increased in proportion to 129 inches. The sedan body is roomier than before and cushion springs are used to make riding easier.

Improvements have been made to the interiors. The instrument panel is redesigned, placing all the gauges and speedometer under a single glass directly in front of the driver. There are six body styles available on the Mercury chassis. Two are new, the coupe and the Mercury station -wagon. The new Club Convertible has something new in the mechanism for raising and lowering the top. Instead of using vacuum, which requires use of engine, tops are raised by dual electric motors which operate at any time. Bodies are mounted on outriggers on the sides of the frame to support the body more rigidly and add stiffness to the frame. The 1941 Mercury has 6.50x16 tires all around, making it possible to run on a 24-pound pressure. There is a wide assortment of colors available, two of which are
