Films Facing Draft Loss
Expect to Lose Men—and| Girls, Too
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Sept. 27 (U. P.).—Abram F. Myers of Washington, General Counsel and Chairman. of the Allied States Association of Motion Picture Exhibitors, said yesterday that, conscription and defense taxes would make next year a “critical one” for movie theaters. In a statement sent to the Allied Theater Owners of New Jersey, in convention here, Mr. Myers said “conscription will take 1,000,000 potential movie goers out of circulation” because men of draft age “seldom go to movies alone; they usually take a girl friend or wife.”

Samuel Raphaelson, ‘Skylark’ Author, And Glenn Anders, Actor, Have Stories
Samson Raphaelson’s career would make a good case history for a psychologist interested in the effect childhood aptitudes have on later adulthood. Mr. Raphaelson, who wrote “Skylark” the Gertrude Lawrence comedy opening Wednesday at English’s, practically grew up with a pencil in his hand and his nose in a book. As a lad he collected pencils, preferred books to baseball. Of course, the argument that these tendencies led to authorhood, could be knocked into a cocked hat
if someone should point out that by following such a premise all children who play with mud pies will blossom into politicians. Nevertheless, any youngster who prefers denouements to doubleplays and begins to turn out acceptable copy at a tender age instead of scrawling “Janey loves Johnny” across neighborhood fences should be supplied with stacks of scratch paper. Since his earliest ‘recollection, Mr. Raphaelson has written for almost = everything—except, perhaps, money from home. Many of his plays and short stories reached the public prints long before he was graduated from the University of Illinois. While there he was editor of “The Siren” a student weekly, allegedly comic. It couldn't have too good, for instead of being kicked out of school as many successful college editors are, he became an instructor in English. After a dip into the advertising business he was a police reporter on the New York Times. Evidently those were quieter, more lawful days for he found time to write a good batch of the 90-odd short stories which has been printed in such diverse publications as Snappy Stories and The Century.

“Leopard Men of Africa” which opened at the Apollo yesterday is the second jungle film made by Dr. Paul L. Hoefler who produced “Africa Speaks.” The latter was ex-|. cellent. As originally issued, “Leopard Men” was said to have contained these notable picture firsts: Congo animals in color; lions actually climbing trees; savage, horrifying Bonfima ceremonies; leopard-men in full regalia stalking human prey; a locust plague; an erupting volcano and some 50 other unusual scenes. As shown at the Apollo, the film evidently has been cut or Dr. Hoefler has found it cheaper to film jungle pictures in the Zeidman International studios. True, there are some pictures of a locust plague which, if authentic, are remarkable; duck-billed African women; excellent slow motion pho- | tographs of the leaping Impallas: a native lion hunt; a baby DickDick (a deer-like animal): and the usual lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebra, waterbuck and wildebeast. Most of this has been done before. The producers seem a little selfconscious about the whole picture for they preface it with a written prolog which states that because certain tribal rites are taboo parts of the film were enacted by nonnatives to give it continuity. They might have said that “any resemblance to a genuine African picture was purely coincidental.” —D. M.

Composer Pianist
This diametrical talent would seem to indicate that he was on the wrong beat. He should have been a rewrite man—that paragon of the fourth estate who with ‘equal ease can handle a titanic disaster or the perennial story of the orphan kitten being mothered by a dog. In 1925 his first play, “The Jazz Singer,” was produced. It was an outstanding success, as wag his “Accent on Youth.” Of the four other plays (besides “Skylark”) . he has written, he makes an effort to forget three of them. The other—“Young Love’—was Dorothy Gish’s first starring vehicle. For nine years he was a Hollywood writer, by contract called upon “to work on” rather than “to write” some 100 scenarios. Some of these, too, he doesn’t care to remember. The ones he can recall without squeamishness include “The Shop Around the Corner,” “The Merry Widow.” “Trouble in Paradise” and “One Hour With You.” Which gives you a rough idea what to look out for should your young son start collecting pencils.
