The Court House—

ANNUAL MONTH FOR TAXPAYING ROLLS AROUND

Treasurer's | Office Busy; Courts Also Wake Up After Recess.

By HARRY MORRISON The Court House is beginning to awaken from a long summer slumber and the most active room for the next month will be the Treas-

urer's Office, where yesterday County taxpayers began making their semi-annual pilgrimage. to the pay window, The first two days have been slight, but steady. Tomorrow will be the first big day, with perhaps $150,000 being collected, according to Albert | L. Koesters, deputy treasurer. : Saturday is always a good day, Mr. Koesters said, because Friday and Saturday are pay days and

many taxpayers have Saturday morning off. Delinquent taxes will take quite | a slump, too, before the” last day | for payment, Nov. 4, rolls around. | Mr. Koesters said that people get | into the idea of paying taxes and | often get rid of their delinquencies | at the same time they make the regular payments. | A few get the pleasant surprise accorded to one elderly lady this morning. She brought in| her last receipt, intending to make an early | payment on this half-year’'s taxes and was told that she had! paid for | the whole year last March.

Courts Busy Again

The court rooms are beginning to bustle with their regular fall activity. Criminal Court already has had a murder case. Circuit. Court is now in the midst of a jury trial damage suit. Day by day, the five Superior Courts see unhappy wives and husbands whose only solution is divorce. Most of the. divorces are uncontested, but occasionally a contested suit brings fireworks.

‘He Won't Eat Dust

County Commissioner John S. Newhouse got an invitation to come to dinner last night and eat a little dust but, he turned it down. No man to fail to return a compliment, as asked Mrs. George Arndt

of 857 Thopmson Road if she would |

like to be a commissioner for a few days. Although it was clearly a case of nothing. accomplished, the two parted good friends and Mr. Newhouse promised he would see if something could be done about pav-

ing Thompson road east of Madi- |

son Ave. with blacktop. Mrs. Arndt was one of [a group lof Thompson Road residents who presented a petition to the commis|sioners yesterday asking that the road be paved. | Mrs. William H. ‘Myers of 917 Thompson Road said 'she had been on a similar mission before the commissioners four years before, Mr. Newhouse |was saying that there were a number of roads in the county similarly situated to Thompson Road| and that the County just didn't have the money to do all the jobs at once, when Mrs. Arndt interrupted. “Mr. Newhouse,” she said,” “you just have never seen a road like this cne. There's dust everywhere. I'd like to have you out to dinner so you could see the dust for yourself.” “I appreciate the. invitation,” Mr. Newhouse replied.| “I'd like to have you see our side of it here, too.
