OKLAHOMA COOL T0 ‘HAS-BEENS’
Sooner Governorship Remains Blind Alley on Political Advancement Road.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (U. P.). (U. P) This state's July primary elections followed once more that long-established political tradition that Oklahoma Governors never make a comeback. ies former chief ~ were candidates for nominatipn in the primary. was -victarious. The best known of the three, 70-year-old [former Governor William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, finished, second in the race for congressman-at-large in which the incumbent, Rep. Will Rogers, was renominated. It was Mr. Murray's second unsuccessful race since he left the Governor’s office in 1935. Almost 'as well known as Murray is J. ‘C. "Iron Jack” Walton, who was impeached as Governor in 1923. He was an unsuccessful candidate

for the Senate in 1924, and for Governor in 1934 and 1938. He won| once; in 1932 when he was elected | state corporation commissioner, to] go against tradition. In his latest race Mr. Walton finished second for sheriff of Oklahoma County. Ernest W. Marland, former head of a 100-million-dollar oil empire; and Governor from 1934 to 1938, is | the third. He took his first flier] into politics in 1932 when he was elected Congressman in the Roosevelt landslide. a His political fortunes rose to their peak in 1934 when he was elected Governor. Since then they have dropped. He unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Senator in 1936 and again in 1938. He again sought the Democratic Congressional nomination from his home district this year and lost to! tncumbent, Phil Ferguson. Of Oklahoma's 16 Governors since statenod in 1907, only one—Mr. Walton—has been elected to an office | after his gubernatorial term ex-! " pired. Only one other has held high public office. Robert L. Williams, the state’s World War Governor, was appointed a Federal District judge and more recently was elevated to the Circuit Court of| Appeals. But the tradition still holds and the Oklahoma Governor's office re- | mains politically lethal to the man! who occupies it.
