sympathetic system those non-voluntary body processes | such as digestion, perspiration, and! SO on. . | Here's The Clue | | The only way vou can tell honte- | sickness from any other emotional upset, Dr. McCann says, is through the rather obvious clue, a very strong urge to go home. In a similar state, if the longing were for a lover, the illness would. be called lovesickness. If it were for a de- . ceased person, it would be grief. If the desire were unidentified, it would be a complex.
Symptoms of homesickness are ‘many and varied. Some reported to Dr. McCann “a strange hollow feeling in the pit of the stomach,” i“a lump in the throat,” or “a ‘strange tighening inside.”
More common is a feeling of de-| pression or despair. The victim is; lonely and Milue. He feels that evervthing has gone wrong, that something terrible is about to happen back home, The blues were being sung by 66 per cent of the homesick girls and- 52 per cent of the boys. . | No One Cause

Nearly half were aware of their unsatisfied longings. | About a fifth of these boys and! girls were resorting to inadequate! substitutes for going home, such as| constant writing or telephoning home, thinking and talking about home, dreaming about home.
No one specific cause of home-! sickness was found by Dr. McCann! ‘either in the personalities of the! nostalgic ones, or in what they had | done or the way they were living. | On the. contrary, he reports, causes! of homesickness appear to be un-| limited. | But from his study of the things characterizing homesick persons | imore frequently than those not so. suffering, Dr. McCann ‘has listed! some of the underlying factors.
{ Here Are the Factors Probable predisposing factors for girls are: extreme fondness for home, for people and social functions, and for the home community: keen ‘mental -imagery of home! surroundings whenever the word “home” is heard; the habit of con-| fiding in one’s family and. depend- | ing upon their advice and guid-. ance; and a strong feeling of be-| longing to and sharing in one's! home. ; | Precipitating factors .for girls:! being away from home for the first] time; monotony and boredom; lone-| liness; severe rules and restrictions; disappointment; disillusionment;! ‘dissatisfaction with one's room at college, and with college life in| general; insecurity; discouraging | communications from home; and! funhappiness. - Love Is the Best Probably predisposing factors for boys: extreme fondness for the’ companionship, help and love re-| ceived at home; for the family; and for the home community; many: scholastic honors in high school; a! home town sweetheart; thoughts, about one’s father or about one's: home town sweetheart whenever the word “home” is heard; seldom | being away from home; feeling that there is an interdependence among the members of one’s family; dif-! ficulty in getting acquainted with! ‘girls at college; and irregular hours |for recreation. | Precipitating factors for boys: | monotony and boredom; loneliness;
