Iployers want. The Indianapolis Chamber ¢f Commerce startled quite a few persons with its report this week
ployment plants manufac- | turing machin- | ery is 106.5 per | cent greater; than it was a | year ago August | and payrolls are 1469 per cent hi : Wages range from 90 Roger Budrow cents to $1.20 an | hour here, roughly) have gone up in a few of our 130 machine and | ‘tool shops. Some Detroit plants | have outbid local concerns for help | but employers here balk at starting | what they call “cut-throat competition for men.” They argue the | higher living costs in Detroit cancel the higher wage advantage anyway. | Indianapolis (led by Allison's high pay) is drawing skilled workers from other Indiana cities such as Anderson, Columbus and Lafavette. The “refresher” courses at Technical High School this summer | help some “rusty” machine workers | to get better paying jobs. One way theyre getting around | the shortage here is breaking a job | up into several jobs. Semi-skilled | {workers each do part of a complicated bit of work, watched over by a seasoned, skilled worker who does a few of the more exacting tasks. Promotion is another way. Work- | s here who have been doing fairly | simple jobs are given something more difficult at better pay and new men take over their old jobs. In most plants employees work several hours overtime each day (with time and a half pay for it), on Saturdays. and a few shops are | even working on Sunday (double | pay). During the depression ma- | [chine workers couldn't find jobs that amounted to much. Now the | Employment Service reports their | weekly checks here average $65.
