Here Learning How to Trim

Sails During Stock Market Doldrums

AFTER 10 YEARS OF

ups and downs in the stock

market, Indianapolis brokers are learning to take such days

as yesterday (when a mere 2 their stride.

70,000 shares were traded) in

In fact, brokers have had so little business that one

customer recently called up

was making enough money to stay in business.

his broker, asked him if he The cus-

tomer got an itemized statement (like the banks send out)

in return. To keep going, brokers are skimping on business luxuries, such as $30-a-month investment guides —Poor’s, Fitches—and direct wires to New York. One broker who had 10 bookkeepers in ’29 now employs one. Many give their employees a week oft

each month—without pay.

After a drastic slump in stock prices, brokers immediately down on their staff and other expenses—knowing that it takes some time for the public to regain its confidence and start buying again. Theoretically the present doldrums offer a good opportunity for customers’ men to study their clients’ accounts, advise which stocks to unload and which ones to buy. One broker said, however, that the doldrums usually mean two rounds of golf instead of one for the customers’ man. = 2 » ARGENTINA MAY GRANT 160-million-dollar credit to Britain to buy meat and grain. Negotiations are being conducted in strict secrecy but it was learned today that England is prepared to pledge Britishowned railroads and packing houses as security. Former U. S. ships now sailing under Central American flags may transport the food to England. = & ”

Wall Street is interested in stock of companies making farm equipment. . .. Although European markets have ben lost and competition is keener in the U. S., sales of farm machinery are running 25 per cent ahead of last year, much of which is due to the 5 per cent increase in farm income. . . . The current low price |; of rags is a boon to asphalt roofing firms, rags being the principal ingredient in asphalt roofing products. "GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher Unwilling to be content and take things as they come, I must worry myself sick over the commuting problems which will confront Izler|

At 3 p. m. on that date he is to open the sponsored series of the Chicago Women’s Symphony Orchestra with a concert in the Toledo Museum of Art. And three hours later he is booked to lead the NBC Orchestra in a broadcast from | New York. It just doesn't add up. The first of these three NBC con- | certs is scheduled on the Blue net- | work at 6 p. m. tomorrow. The| program isn't announced, Nor, as vet, are his selections for the first program of the commercial series] made public. But it's a safe bet that there will be some American | music included.
