Under the contest rules, each competing firm names one or more drivers as captains. These captains | attend monthly safety meetings at | which experts discuss various phases | of traffic safety. The captains then | report what they have learned to | the drivers in their own fleet. Many of the companies add incentive by offering company awards, | such as free uniforms for drivers | covering a specified number of ac- | cident-free miles. | Each company reducing its acci- | dents under the previous year’s total receives an “accident reduction” certificate at the close of the contest. Those whose drivers all have perfect records receive “no accident” certificates.
Started by Police
The first year’s trophy for outstanding safety promotion, accident record and general support of the contest, was won by the Indianapolis Street Railways. Last year it went to the Kuehner Packing Co. The contest was originated by the | Indianapolis Police Department and { was sponsored last year by the Indianapolis Lions Club. This year the contest was taken over by the Chamber's committee, which is coordinating various accident preven=- | tion movements locally.

It was recalled that a few weeks | ago an air circles spokesman said: “When you see JU-52s watch for | parachutists.” It was understood, | however, that there were no para- { chutists in evidence when the big plane was shot down. Air experts | said it was known that the Ger- | mans “have been very keen to send planes to Britain carrying 550-pound | | bombs, for which the JU-52 is suit-| | able.” |

Elevator Man Goes Up Fast
HOBOKEN, N. J, Sept. 13 (U. P.).—Georges Kessel, former foreign correspondent of the Paris Soir, arrived in this country with a story of the sensational rise in the world of a Paris elevator operator Kessel and his wife, Jeanine Trispin, French actress, were among 586 passengers aboard the Nea Hellas which docked vesterfrom Lisbon, Portugal. When he returned to Paris after covering the Finnish war, Kassel said, he noticed a new elevator operator, an Alsatian, in the Paris Soir Building. In the course of time the Germans entered Paris and the Soir staff fled, Kessel said. Not long afterward the elevator operator rose to the post of editor-in-chief under Nazi control. He had been a spy.
