Back in the lush Twenties, those homes that boasted a phonograph were pretty sure to have Gene Austin’s record of “My Blue Heaven.” Very likely they also had a waxing of his dulcet invitation, “Come to Me, My Melancholy Baby.” And probably there were other Austin items in their record cabinet. For Gene Austin held, and prob- | ably still holds, the record Ing more phonograph discs than anyone else. He is ascisted by the Sherrel Sisters, who sing and c'o imitations, and by Wil(lard Ellis, who sings a little like {Rudy Vallee, whistles a bit like Bing |Croshy, and tells stories like tae [tongue-twisting Roy Atwell. At first the State Fair patrons fought shy of the Austin show. They thought it was a fake. So the star (had to come out on the frent platform and help with the ballyhoo. And what with the ballyhoo and the performance, there's precious little for him in the 10 hours which now make up his working day.

But jfor Gene Austin. {in singing may have changed, but Mr. Austin hasn't. He's cheerful, energetic and looks as young as he did at the height of his popularity. And his singing is the same kind that once had the whole country listening and waiting for his next release Mr. Austin has a two-weeks contract with the Johnny J. Jones Exposition, which presents him at the Fair. Next week he goes to Louisville. After that he doesn’t know. Maybe he'll keep on with the fairs, or he mav go back to vaudeville, which takes up most of his time at present Recently he recorded a couple .i songs for Decca which seem to be selling well. Perhaps hell get again to the top of the heap. Ileanwhile he seems perfectiv hap)y in the thought that he’s bringing the best entertainment he can to car-
