3 LOCAL MODEL AIRPLANES WIN AT VAN BUREN

Two Seconds and One Third | Place Taken in | Rainy Event.

By DAVID MARSHALL Members of the Indiana Gas! Model Association who competed at | the Van Buren, Ind, meet last Sun-| day batted 100 per cent, Three local fliers entered and three won prizes. Harcld Stofer brought back $10

when he flew his Ohlsson 60-pow-ered originally-designed ship to; gecond place. His total time was 6 minutes 26 seconds, six seconds behind Jack Malone of Tipton who finished first. Mr. Malone flew a Dennymite-powered Clipper. William Keough won $5 and third place with three flights of 4 minutes 50 seconds in his Ohlsson 23-powered | Ensign. Mr. Keough's ship spun on! the first flight and crashed about 40 feet under power. The plane hit nose first, though, the only damage being a shattered prop. After he installed a new one he went on to take third spot. Charles Meyers, a local junior] member, was second in the rubber-! powered outdoor stick event. He won a kit | The only other person who went up to the meet was Tom Stephens. Mr. Stephens took the ship he had finished the dav before but after listening to the motor turn over decided not to compete. Because of the plane's weight he needs plenty of “soup” to make a good showing. The flight times were held down by poor weather. From about 1 p m. on it rained steadily for three hours. Although some of the 26 contestants tried flving in the rain they didn't have much luck. By 3:45 p. m. when they started to get in some good flights the rain had cooled the air until there were practically no thermal currents to carry the ships

Muncie Disappointing The local fliers were very disappointed over the Muncie meet. | Several of the pilots had long | flights only to find the Muncie] timers had stopped their watches (they never did explain why) or that | they had been clocking the wrong | ship. | ies Bennett Sr. flew his ship | for 15 minutes on one flight only to find the timer hadn't caught him. His son, too, had a flight of nearly eight miles which he said wasn't properly timed. |

Two Meets Booked

The association will split up again this Sunday to compete in the Louisville and Cincinnati meets. Two or three fliers will go to Cin-! cinnati including Mr. and Mrs.| Stofer, while about eight are set for| Louisville, among them Harold Har- | ris, Bill Herman and Frank Volrath i

C. of C. Is Friendly

The local association is important enough, the Junior Chamber of Commerce believes, to watch and encourage. Edward Green Jr. of the air commerce committee of the Chamber, regularly attends the semi-monthiy associated meetings and is vitally interested in the progress of loc fliers. It is from this group that the leaders of tomorrow’s local aviation circles will come, the Chamber thinks, so it is to the Chamber's advantage to do all it can to encourage the model pilots. The Chamber's position is that everything which can be done to increase interest in Indianapolis aviation tends to some day mean much to the city in the bringing of aviation companies here, increasing the worth of the local airport and generally making Indianapolis the aviation center of the Middle West.

Model Autos

The Indianapolis Model Racing | Club meets tonight at Cropsey Audi- | torium in the Central Library. Still unsettled is the problem of a | new track site. Also it will be the final meeting before the race at! Crawfordsville Sunday. Several | drivers were there last Sunday get- | ting in test runs around that oval.

P).—At-| tacking America’s material support | . : | to Great Britain, Mario Appelius, | Italian war correspondent writing] in Premier Mussolini's Popolo | d'Italia, yesterday said the United! O'MAHONEY RENOMINATED CHEYENNE, Wyo. Aug. 22 (U.| P).—Senator Joseph C. O'Mahoney, | who seconded the third term nomination of President Roosevelt, was renominated by a 10 to 1 margin for a second six-year term in Congress, | virtually complete returns from Wyoming's Tuesday primary showed | today.
