2 JANE JORDAN
DEAR JANE JORDAN-—I have just read your column of August 13 and feel that I have something in common with “Heartsick.” I have been married to an unfaithful, drinking man for 14 years. I did love him with all my heart but not now. I almost hate him. His life is one round of drinking and women. He brags to everyone of his affairs. He is going with an unmarried girl who has a baby. He has told me all about it. We have a daughter 9 years old and I feel that I owe it to her to leave. He only gives us a mere living, spending almost all his salary on drinking. What worries me most is how I am to support my child. I am 30 years old with no special training. It is terrible to live with someone you cannot respect and feel that everyone thinks you are a fool. NERVOUS.

Answer—The difference between your problem and that of “Heartsick” is that you have a child to support and she has none. This means that you have to be more cautious than she in applying for your freedom. It is not that the child will be benefited by the preservation of so unhappy a home; it is simply a question of where you will eat. Of course you can get a court allowance for the support of the child, but what is there to prevent an unscrupulous man from skipping the country or drinking to the point where he actually ? cannot hold a job? Apparently the fact that he has a home holds him steady enough to work and pay the rent. With the break-up of your marriage he might get so he couldn't, or wouldn't, do even this. I should think that the best thing you can do is to get a job, or train vourself for a job, while he is still providing for you, however poorly. It will give vou something to do to keep your mind off your troubles. Best of all it will give vou hope that the time will come when vou can stand on your own feet, able to act independently without fear of disaster. Set a goal and start moving toward it. The unhappiest people are those who are caught in a trap without the slightest hope of getting out. In the meantime you might try to understand what makes your husband behave the way he does. The picture you give is of a fearful, insecure personality who drinks to make himself feel big and strong, who runs after women to reassure himself of his masculine prowess, and who brags about his conquests to prevent people from knowing how inferior he feels. Is there anything you can do to give him confidence in himself? He loved you once and your love made him feel that he was worth something for a while. Now hie has torn himself down in your eyes with nobody but himself to thank, but he feels guilty about it and drinks, in part, to drown his disappointment in himself. Would a little encouragement help him? Perhaps not. It may be too late,
Note to Heartsick: I have Yeceived your second letter, but since
there is no new material in it, I have nothing to tell you. JANE JORDAN.
