CITY DEALERS ‘DIVIDED ABOUT '40 AUTO SHOW
Directors to Vote on: Aug. 23; Johnson Named to Directors’ Board.
At 10 a. m. on Aug. 23, directors of the Indianapolis Auto Trade As-| sociation will meet at 928 N. Merid- | lan St. to consider this question: Shall Indianapolis have an auto- | mobile show this year? In 1939, for the fist time in| years, no show was held. Too many dealers balked. i] Some of them felt that the out-| lay of about $1000 a dealer to cre- | ate a really good dispiay was too much for the return experienced. ! Others contended the public was | fed up with paying 40 cents to see
something they later were expected |
to buy. A few believe the idea has] run its course, that autos no longer are enough of a novelty for people | to pay to see them. Before the directors vote on| whether a show is to be held, they
sound out their fellow dealers so! |
that the vote is the consensus «of | the majority. This year, some dealers again oppose the show idea. One of the! largest car manufacturers will not | Participate, its dealers say, unless the admission charge is dropped. Other dealers insist such a move! would be too e¢ostly. They just] couldn't afford to spend the neces-| sary $1000, more or less, it would | take to pull in the spectators. In|
the last show in 1038, they point
out, the attendance was about] 19,000 for the week. Back in the! food old days it was far above this and the percentage of buyers was! enough greater than the lookers to make the show pay sales dividends. | Thus the question stands. Dealers | on both sides have good arguments | to support their stand. Next Fri-| day's meeting will see which side is the more persuasive.

DETROIT, Aug. 16 (U.
