U. S. SURVEYS INDIANA ROADS FOR ARMY USE
Main Trouble Found So Far Is Shoulders and Bridges Tsu Narrow. A new black automobile contain-
Ing two men is rolling slowly over Indiana's main highways.
Both men watch the road closely. |
They talk quite a lot about the road. and every few minutes the nondriver jots down notes on the highwav, They're engineers from the Chicago office of the Public Roads Administration making a ‘“reconnaissance survey” of Indiana's rtrategic roads at the request of the War Department.
Need Wider Shoulders
Their main purpose is to report the roads and bridges that will have
to be changed to make them suit-|
able for military “through routes” 10 be used in the War Department's defense plans. The chief change that will have to be made on many of the roads, according to reports reaching the State Highway Commission here, is io widen the roads’ shoulders. Many of the roads now have shoulders of only five and six feet in width This is too narrow for War Department purposes, Shoulders of at least 11 feet width are needed so that Army trucks and tanks can be parked on the side of the road without impeding traffic.
250 Miles a Day
Rridges that will have {0 be replaced. Similar =survevs are being made in the other 47 states, The Indiana crew is traveling over about 250 miles of highway a day. and is scheduled to be through with its work by the middle of next week Particular attention is being paid to U. S. 52 and 41, from Indianapolis to Chicago; U. S. 24, from Ohio through Ft. Wayne to Chicago; 30, from Ft. Wavne to Chicago; 52, from Indianapolis to Cincinnati; 20, across the northern part of the state from Ohio to Chicago; 40, across Central Indiana; 31, from Niles, Mich., to Louisville, Ky, and 41, from Terre Haute to Evansville,

EVENTUALLY, | * AIR BASE WORD
Navy to Locate One of 13
Centers Here but Not | One of First Three.
The Navy Department “eventual Iv" will locate 8 Naval Reserve aviation training base in Indianapolis. This, among other things, was reported today by Myron Green. Chamber of Commerce industrial commissioner, who has just returned from a week's “exploration” visit in Washington. | Mr. Green said Indianapolis will get one of the proposed 13 new Navy | air bases, but that the city isn't on| the list for the first three to be con-| structed immediately. | 1
“I think we'll eventually get one! but IT don't know exactly when,” Mr. Green said, Al the asme time, he reported that a special board appointed by the National Advisory Committee | for Aeronautics will inspect “probably next week” Municipal Airport facilities as the possible site of the $8,600,000 Federal aircraft engine research laboratory, | Indianapolis is one of 57 seeking the laboratory and is said “near the top” in the running. Mr. Green reported the possibilities | and probabilities on the project | coming here are “unchanged.” While in Washington Mr. Green and Rep. Louis Ludlow launched an effort to obtain a $10,000,000 Naval optical plant for Indianapolis, { They also checked up on the proposed Ft, Harrison improvements and proposed $500,000 expansion program” for Stout Field, both to be carried out under the natione defense program. i Also under consideration is the possible location at the Municipal: Airport here of an Army pursuit plane base, which would bring 1500 enlisted men and more than 100 officers to Indianapolis. The Naval Reserve aviation base would be smaller than the proposed | Army base. The Naval Reserve would train 30 pilots a month.

LEAD IV SALES..
Chevrolet trucks lead in sales because they have the most desirable balance of power, economy and durability— power to do the job well, economy to do the job at low | cost, and durability to stay on | the job. That all adds up to value—exceptional value that has kept Chevrolet trucks out in front in sales—leading | again in 1940, as they have led | vear after year. Consider modernizing some of your trucking equipment now— all models and types of Chevrolet trucks are still available at today's low price level.
