MEMBERS of the Indianapolis ball club who were close personal friends of Willard Hershberger, Who committed suicide in Boston Saturday, were deeply shocked and grieved over the tragedy. Johnny Vander Meer roomed with Hershie at times and other ex-Reds with the Indians renewed acquaintances with the catcher when the Cincinnati team played an ex-

NEW YORK, Aug. 5—Hand me down my walking cane and my cheese, Boys, because this rat is leaving a sinking ship. Goodby, ‘Capt. McCarthy! Farewell, First Mate Dickey! So long, Boatswain Di Maggio! ANd au revoir to the rest of you Yankse:s —Ruffing, Keiler, ‘Gordon, Dahlgren and Salkirk. Tt was nice to have Krotwn vou when—when you were bombers instead of busts, champions instead of chumps, and victors instead of vanquished. I don't know to what American Lieague ship I am going, as I gaily Teap overboard, but Im on my Way to a safer haven. Tt may be CleveTard, it may be Detroit, or it may even be Boston. At the moment I'm treading water, but that is better than becoming a completely drowned Tat. Rat that T admit I am for leaving you When the gunwales are a-Wwash, there are extenuating circumstances. Many a man has stuck by a ball club, but try to name me a ball club that has stuck by a man. When I had whooping cough Tast year did McCarthy come by and

did Joe Di Maggio bake me a cake with an autogiaph on it? When the loan company clamped down oh me did any one of the Yankees vol= unteer to dig inte his World Series money to save me the embarrass= ment of embarassing my ¢o-sighers? No, no, a thousand times no. You could put in your eye ail the calves foot jelly and broth the Yankees brought me when glowing pains attacked me. For all they cared the loan company could make me inte chairs. : So, it's With a Whisk of my Whiskers that I leap from their ship, and leave them to their second division foundering. Having spent the past four and a half years aboard the Yankee ship, it is only natural that I should be expected to explain my deser= tion. I made a careful study of the team before, tan and cheese I jumped. I had the outfield ih to dinner, and I took the infield out dinner. I played catch With the pitchers, and played pitch With the
catehers. I discussed Willkie with the utility men and discussed Roosevelt
with the relief men.
What more could a man do than all this? Nothing, so after all this I reached the conclusion that motivated My quitting the Yankees—the Yankees, as of today, are nine games out of first place. I have a sneaking feeling that I eventually will end up boarding the Cleveland ship. If I do, my welcome should be warm. After all the nice things I have said about the Vittmen they should not only make it warm for me, but too hot for me. In case I do board the Cleveland ship let me explain now that I am only an Indian giver I take back all T ever said about the club. There is this to be said for the Cleveland club, too. It's the one place in the American League that a friend can have a Feller. But on second thought, I may not go to the Cleveland ship. AS I understand it, if you are rat you have to go to President Bradley's stateroom every morning before noon and ory a great big ory, and issue a great big squawk about being in first place or just out of first place. The mote T think about it the more I think I may just paddle over to the good old 8. 8. Detroit. The Detroits may have made an outfielder out of an infielder, and a first baseman out of a catcher, but they never tried to make an ass out of a manager.
