| YESTERDAY: Although Johnny pre- | fers to delay introducing Molly to the | Cape crowd, she insists on going to the | Meltons’ party. Jean greets Molly, de- | fending her against Sue Melton's anger. |

CHAPTER FIVE | JOHNNY'S RELIEF that Jean | and Sue hadn't combined forces to | scratch Molly's eyes out vanished ! when he caught the look of tri- | umph in Jeans glance. She wanted! Moily to come to tea. He wondered if he should warn Molly that the | kitten had claws. He hadn't wanted a scene be- | tween the two of them, and ap-| parently he wasn't going to get a | scene. On the bare face of it, the | facts pointed to reasons for Te | Joicing., Even Jean, with her arm | around Molly, leading her back to- | ward the house didn't convince him | that ail of this was on the level, | however. | “Come along and meet all of us,” Jean said, and Johnny followed them back across the lawn, The rest of the evening passed | §0 smoothly and uneventfully that | Johnny began to think he was unduly suspicious of Jean's ulterior motives. Molly sat on the green | flowered love-seat and told them | enchantingly about the Theater. She mimicked Mr. Earl and they | howled with delight. She told| them how acting was taught at the | dramatic school and they loved her | for letting down her hair.

MOLLY WAS telling Sue good night, when Johnny went to find | Jean. He had watched her as she| sat on a cushion beside the empty! fireplace, smoking cigaret after cigaret. | “You've been a swell sport, Jean"! Johnny told her. “You could have! been pretty nasty about all this. | And I do thank vou.” | “Don’t thank me,” Jean said curt-| lv. “And don't pity me. I'm not} going to be a dog in the wood-pile! but she's still got to do a lot of] proving.” ! “Why, vou acted as if you thought | the was lovelv.
