‘SENSATIONAL’ AZTEC MONOLITH IS FOUND

MEXICO CITY, July 25 (U. P.).— Workmen digging behind Mexico City’s main cathedral yesterday uncovered a huge Aztec statue scribed as a “sensational”

| ological discovery.

The monolith is known historical-

lv as Coatlicue and represents the!

Aztec goddess of death. It was one of the biggest statues of the main Aztec temple, known as Gran Tecolli, which stood at one time on the site of the present cathedral. The Spanish writer Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a member of the first group of Spanish conquistadores to subjugate Mexico, mentioned the monolith in his book, “The Real History of the Conquest of New Spain.”

procedure throughout the state. Exact Measurements Needed

Besides a pencil and paper, the assessors will be required-—by the manual which is to be published and distributed to them this fall—to carry a tape measure and cards on which detailed information will have

to be written. The assessors will write on these

or land, its location and its valuation as well as other pertinent details. In some cases photographs

may be required, Tax Board mem-

bers said. The cards will be filed in the assessor’s office and will be available for reference at all times. They will bring about a uniform system of assessment throughout the state, officials predict.

Won't Correct All Defects

This procedure, of course, won't

[correct all the defects in the pres-

ent system, but it will be a lot better than the present situation where practically no data backing up the valuation is filed, C. R. Benjamin, Board member, said. For the real estate owner, the Board is planning to request the Legislature next spring to order a re-assessment of all real property in the state. Not since 1932 has there been a re-assessment of real estate, and the land and building values have changed a lot since that time, Philip Zoercher, Board chairman, says.

Here's An Example

For instance. there is the case of a Michigan City house owner whose property in 1932 was valued at $3200. The valuation on his house declined and he sought to have his valuation lowered, but he was refused, since all the other houses in his neighborhood had valuations in proportion to his. These house owners did not seek to have their valuations lowered. The other day the house owner sold his home for $2300. “That is one of the many sorts of

situations we hope to remedy by re-

assessment,” Mr. Zoercher said. Some of the old houses bear valuations for taxation purposes above their actual value, while many of the houses constructed since 1932 are valued below their real worth, he asserted. Mr. Zoercher said he felt the Legislature should provide for a reassment since it would be “the voice of the people speaking.” He declined to sav whether the Tax Board would order re-assess-ment if the Legislature should leave the matter up to them as it did in 1937.

MEXICAN OIL LABOR TOLD TO REORGANIZE

MEXICO CITY, July 25 (U.P) .— President Lazaro Cardenas demanded todav that Mexican oil workers reorganize the nationalized imdustry at once in order to insure efficient operation or prepare to suffer the consequences in the form of lower pay and removal of privileges. President Cardenas in a banquet speech last night summoned all labor unions to work toward the common destiny of the nation which, he said, necessitates fair guarantees 'o honest foreign vapital. Descr bing the situation in the oil industry as grave, the order said that unless the workers improved. conditions the Government intended to stop year-end bonus payments, take rent-free dweilings from workors in higher brackets, reduce overtime. continue downward revision of wage scales, cut wages of higher paid executives 10 per cent, limit vacations, leave vacancies unfilled and reduce transitory employment, He said that the oil administration must be free to move workers at will.

WIFE SUES HAWKS, CHARGING CRUELTY

HOLLYWOOD, July 25 (U.P) .— Howard Hawks, high-salaried film director, was sued for divorce yesterday bv his legally incompetent wife, Athole Hawks, sister of Norma Shearer, on grounds of cruelty, nonsupport and desertion. The suit was filed by Edith Shearer, who was appointed guardian of Mrs. Hawks and her estate last April 22. The complaint alleged that Mrs. Hawks, now in a rest home at La Jolla, had become both physically and mentally ill because of Hawks’ cruelty during the last two years, that he had deserted her in February, 1939, and now refused to support her. HOLLYWOOD, July 24. was sued for divorce yesterday by Mrs. Marjorie Kummer Young, who charged ne deserted her a year ago. The English-born actor is noted for his work in the “Topper” series of movies.
