TIMBER LAND IN STATE GAINING
19-Year-0ld Law Providing For Lower Taxes Brings
Increase. The acreage of Indiana timber land is increasing anually under a
19-year-old law providing that classifiea forest land be assessed for taxes on a valuation of only $1 per acre ’ Since the law was passed, more than 100,000 acres have been classified officially as forest land by the Division of Forestry of the State Department of Conservation. Applications for designation of 3000 more acres as forest land have been filed within the last few months. I'he law was passed to encourage farmers and land ovrners, through the low taxes, to devote portions of
their land permanently to the production of timber. Virgil M. Simmons, Conservation Commissioner, says that the law is causing many farmers to plant barren acres to trees and that the many acres planted and classified
during the past years are being maintained. Under the statute, an acre of planted land to be classified as for-
est land for the low tax rate must have a stand of 600 trees. There is
no set number of trees for an acre of virgin timber. The size of the trees are considered in classifying this land The landowners also must protect the forest land from fires and grazing The 3000 acres now being considered for designation as forest land comprise approximately 60 tracts of land, ranging from three to 150 acres in size, in 40 counties, Mr. Simmons said
