A. L. Learns ol Flag Races

By GEORGE KIRKSEY

United Press Staff Correspondent

CHICAGO, July 17.—Those American Leagu2z clubs, unused to the strain of participating in a nervewracking pennant race as late as mid-July, have the screaming meanies in the worst way. Cleveland has lost three straight to the sixth-place Senators. The Tigers have dropped three out of four to the seventh-place Athletics. The Yankees have been humbled twice in succession by the fifthplace White Sox The Red So. were smart didn't play yesterday.

Cleveland Crumbles

Cleveland put on the worst exhibition of plain and fancy nose-div-mg vesterdav. With a chance to take ove the American League Yead, the Vittmen kicked away a 7-2 lead and wound up losing to the Senators, 118. O1 top of five runs going into the last of thie sixth, Cleveland fell apart as Washington jammed over seven uns. Five Cleveland pitchers couldn't stop the Senators, but Johnny Allen was charged with the defeat. The Senators did all they could to toss the game away with four errors but the Vittmen simply wouldn't think of taking advantage of the generosity of Bucky Harris noble athletes George Caster, who's been licked 13 times this season and hasn't won a game since June 26, stopped Detroit, 3-1. for his third triumph. He pitched a six-hitter against the league leaders. Sam Chapman hit homer No. 14 as Freddy Hutchinson lost his first start since coming back to the Tigers from the minors The Yankee pennant - wagon slowed down before the pitching of John Rignev, who concocted a siXhitter as the White Sox triumphed 3-1. Joe Kuhel hit his 15th homer ta pace a 12-hit atack on Manus Russo. Reds Stretch Lead

A rained-out game and a Brooklyn loss combined to ‘enable Cincinnati to build up a 3'.-game lead over the Dodgers, the Reds’ longest lead of the season. Pittsburgh came from behind to upset the Dodgers, 3-3, after trailing 3-0 as late as the sixth. John Lanning won his fourth game but it was his first complete one. Bob Elliott's {triple in the eighth off Tot Pressnell was the winning poke. Rain prevented the Phils-Red game, The Cardinals straight triumph Rees, 4-3. Country two homers (Nos, Johnny Mize hit one (No. 24), Clvde Shoun, although tapped for 12 hits, went the route to win. Verne Olsen outdueled Ham Gumbert ta give Cubs a 2-9 shutout over, the Giant Olsen allowed «1x hits and Gumbert four Phil Cavarretta's single with the bases filled in the seventh drove in {he two Cub tallies.
