Lamar Stringfield, composer, conductor and flutist, will be repre-

sented on tomorrow's Radio City |

Music Hall hour with the frst

broadcast of his Two Indian Sketch-!

es, written in 1923.

Mr. Stringfield is a native of |

North Carolina and has devoted most of his creative activity to re-| search and treatment of the folk | music of the Carolina mountains. His single opera, incidental music and other compositions of the more “absolute” classification all pear the | stamp of his preoccupation with native melody. Even the Indian themes in tomorrow’s broadcast. composition were obtained without leaving his home state. For there 1s a Cherokee Reservation in southwestern North

Carolina. Mr. Stringfield reports] that its aboriginal residents are |

touched by civilization even more than their brothers in Oklahoma. but that they still revert to ancestral customs at harvest time and make music which is ages old. The Indian Sketches consist of a

Serenade and a “Green Corn] Dance.” The first is a musical im- |

The work will be performed by

the Music Hall String Quartet and |

Frederick Wilkins, flutist. Mr. Wilkins will be heard in the Pastorale and Rondo by Desportes. Other soloists on the broadcast will be Julia Charol, contralto, singing Schumann's “Ich grolle nicht” and Carnevali's Spanish Serenade, and Henrietta Schumann. who will be heard with members of the Music Hall ensemble in the Andante and Finale from Dvorak's Piano Quartet. The string quartet will be open to the program with the Arensky Variations in a Theme by Tschailkowsky. tomorrow, Howard Barlow gain will draw upon the splendid collec tion of music by the Strauss family, which the Library of Congress ac=quired from Vienna shortly before |the Anschluss. | The collection was acquired from | the late Paul Lowenburg, a Strauss=- | loving railroad man. It consists of 1644 pieces of sheet music by the two Johann Strausses, father and son, and by Eduard and Joseph Strauss. Also in the collection is music by the Strausses’ almost equally illustrious contemporaries, | Joseph and August Lanner. Some of these pieces were re= corded by Mr. Barlow and the or= chestra after their first American hearing via radio last year. Tomor=(row five of them will be repeated-— ‘the “Ballg'schichten,” “Cham = pagner,” “Telegrafische Depeschen” and “Motoren” waltzes, and the “Schnellpost” polka. Mr. Barlow's announced program (1 p. m,, CBS-WFBM) also includes the Overture and Dream Music from Humperdinek’s "Haensel and Gretel,” and Haydn's “Clock” Symphony. ” n n CBS-WFBM has a goodly supply of attractive programs for the coming week in addition to those listed ‘above. At 9:15 a. m. tomorrow, | Yella Pessl will include on her harpsichord recital a suite by the {17th Century Flemish composer, Loeillet. Apparently it will be the [first American performance of the | work, | # =n =n The Lewisohn Stadium concerts are now established on a weekly 'broadcast basis, the hour being 7 p. m. on Wednesdays. WFBM has arranged to bring these programs ‘to local listeners. Edwin McArthur will conduct this week's concert, but the program had not arrived at the time this was written. At 1:45 p. m. Thursday. Alexander Semmler will conduct a program of 18th Century orchestral music, including works of Purcell, Rameau. Mozart and Haydn. And at 9:30 a. m. next Saturday (still via WFBM) the Dorian Strine Quartet will play the Quartet in B Minor by Arthur Shepherd, Cleveland composer.
