In each of the films so far there have been four plote: Andy, his romantic and monetary problems and his jalopy: the more mature jovs and sorrows of Judge and Mrs. Hardy: Marian’s turbulent affairs of the heart, and Aunt Milly's story In that way all the family’s members get their chance at the audience's attention. Such procedure tends to weld a handfui of cinema temperaments into as happy a unit off the screen as the Hardys are on celluloid

Tschaikowsky Fresh Outiook

Centenary Brings

in New Album

By JAMES THRASHER

Tschaikowsky, song recital; Maria Kurenko, soprane (Victor), The almost forgotten Tschaikowsky centenary observances finally have brought us a fresh and most welcome consideration of this beloved composer's work in the present album. For the most part the centennial celebrations consisted of innumerable pe rformances of the last three symphonies and the * ‘Romeo. and Juliet,” with a few sprinkings of the B. "lat Minor Piano Concerto. What was needed more in an appreciative cycle of performances were some examples of the mnayv fine songs which form a part of Tschaikowsky's neglected legacy. Aside from “None But the Lonely Heart,” few of the 10 songs in this album will be familiar to even the assiduous concert-goer. Mme. Kurenko’s selections do not include all the best songs, but they are suited to her voice and temperament, and they are both illuminating and rewarding. Through them all is an unmistakable stamp of Russian origin, though Western European forces are equally apparent—German influence in the earlier examples and a more Gallic atmosphere about the later opus numbers. "A good proportion of the 10 are magnificent by any consideration, revealing a deep-felt assimilation of the poet's emotion expressed with symmetry, taste and economy. Mme. Kurenko sings in Russian, and brings to the songs a good understanding and a pleasing voice, thought it is not the voice which delighted early radio listeners some 15 vears ago. Sergei Tarnowskyv's accompaniments are serviceable,

dozens of suites. serenadqes, tions and dvertimenti which he tossed off {or special occasions such as weddings—and, I suppose, wakes and christenings. The present recorded divertimento, like the others one occasionally hears, is not what you would call great music. But sucil was Mozart's prodigal genius that he seemed incapable of withholding his genius even from trifling music. There are five movements—an Allegro, Anaantino, Rondo, tvo Minuets (one a theme and variations) and a Marcia alla francese. The march is inferior, but the other movements are filled with gay melody, {resh delights and sly bits of Mozartean wizardry. The work is scored for string quartet, oboe and French horn. And the unidentified players are capital, if one overlooks a couple of utrident moments of ensemble.

Beethoven, Symphony No. 4 in B Flat Major; Arturo Toscanini and the B. B. C. Symphony Orchesra (Victor),

Records of the complete Beethoven symphonies under Maestro Toscanini’s baton, which a great many music lovers have been hoping for, come a step nearer to realization with the release of the present albume This seldom-plaved symphony is particularly interesting when set beside Mr. Toscanini's waxing of the Fifth and Seventh. The Fourth is of less world-shaking proportions than the other two, and the interpretation is scaled accordingly. This is not to sav. however, that the conductor's mercurial mastery is lacking. The B Flat Symphony is deceptively deep and vigorous beneath its pleasant surface. And within a more limited dynamic range, Mr. Toscanini breathes into the music the arresting vitality which we have come to expect along with his consummate devotion to the composer's every mood and meaning. The British Broadcasting Orchestra plays splendidly and the record:ng whic I take is of not-too-recent vintage, is good.
