July 3.—Only one of the brated “bums” remained in action today. vived the Classic of the Clowns over Galento, his foremost rival in name calling to call it quits after the seventh round The climax was ironic and unusual in that the boastful Galento accepted defeat sitting moodily in his corner, his oval face cruelly battered and blood streaming from nose and mouth. Under his lower lip was a bone-deep gash in the form of a half moon. Later he complained of a broken hand.

about his work. He did not leave his theatrical didoes in the dressing room altogether but for the most part he was an earnest, conscientious worker. This was one time he had the will and the determination to win. We were convinced he would win as early as the second round. Galento's chief sock :n trade was a sweeping left hook to the head. This is the punch with which he almost won the heavyweight championship from Louis. But last night he was wild and he missed more often than he landed. When he did land, of course it hurt, but Baer had all the gameness he needed. It must have been encouraging to his handlers in the corner when they saw him take Galento's best licks and come back fighting. He gave Galento as fierce a beating as the roly poly man ever took.

It was plain to the pressmen in close up ring side seats that the courageous Italian was through for the night but a commission doctor went through the formality of examining him before the announcer was permitted to state that the end had come. Technically it was an eighth round knockout, since the seventh had passed into the records before any action was taken Galento was out punched and out fought plains why he will probably go into retirement and devote the rest of his days to the conduct of his quaint bistro in adjacent Orange. If he emerged with any consolation it was that he will no longer be considered as an opponent for Joe Louis. This, in turn, was the only thing that marred Baer's artistic pleasure because it is in Promoter Mike Jacobs’ mind to give Baer another shot at the champion. But it would be silly to say that Baer is again a serious heavyweight threat. True enough, Baer proved himself much better than Galento last night but that scarcely makes him a first class menace for the champion who punched him into quick submission the first time they met, If there was any surprise development in the fight, aside from the fact that Galento was the favorite and therefore was expected to win, it was in the relatively serious manner in which Baer went

As we saw it, Galento took only one round, the first. From then on Baer was more or less in complete charge. He hit Galento a left hook in the stomach early in the second round and it seemed the Italian bar keep was never quite the same after that. It was a tremendous blow and Galento's blubbery mid section shook all over. Always a great hitter with his right hand—remember the night he knocked out Schmeling?—Bzer was particularly effective with this weapon last night. Time after time he would step inside Galento's sweeping left hooks and counter with head rocking right hands. Baer began to stagger Galento as early as the third. He caught him with a dilly of a right to the jaw that caused blood to spurt all over the white ring canvas. Near the bell he tagged old Two Ton with a brutal left hand that spun him half way around. Of the two Baer was better shape. Just how much would be risky to guess because the magnificent screwball doesn't like training too well anyway Just the same he brought more stamina and vitality into the ring than did his opponent, and in the end this paid off. Precisely what effect tl iniqueness of being in shape for once in his life will Baer in his subsequent ring activities is too bizarre for contemplation
