Excellent Menuhin Disc. Among Current Best Single Releases

By JAMES THRASHER

Although the accent is on albums in the field of serious recorded music, each month brings its quota of worthy and entertaining single Especially with the lower-priced Columbia and Victor records now available, there is now little reason why the phonograph -en-

thuiast of modest means should library of lasting satisfaction. Following are some of the more interesting items among the current single releases:

Mozart, Allegro from Sonata in G; Yehudi Menuhin, violinist; Hephzibah Menuhin, pianist.

Mozart, Andantino from Sonata in B Flat; Yehudi Menuhin, violinist, and Yaltah Menuhin, pianist (Victor).

These two sides would seem to have some historical value apart from musical merit, since they enlist the services of all three of the remarkable Menuhins. It is doubtful when, if ever, we shall have another recording: from them, since Miss Hephzibah is a staid matron of 20, residing with her husband in Australia and showing no inclination to give up the retirement she announced at the time of her marriage two years ago. Yaltah (the family divorcee at the age of 19) never has followed in the professional footsteps of her older brother and sister. So a musical. Menuhin reunion for public consumption is something to be treasured. From the musical standpoint the performance, it scarcely need be said, is excellent. Mr. Menuhin plays his Mozart with an admirable restraint and purity of style, even though there are moments of lachrymose bowing. And the sisterly "pianists offer ster= »ling and charming -cellabpration. The selections are among the

happiest inspirations of Mozart's violin and piano sonatas.

Chopin, Ecossaises, Berceuse; = Alexander Brailowsky, pianist (Victor).

Mr. Brailowsky ' plays the gay, sprightly and rather neglected Ecossaises with sparkling virtuosity. The Berceuse is slightly -less appealing. Since Chopin obviously intended the left hand part in the Berceuse to suggest the rocking of a cradle, it does not seem too literal to object to Mr. Brailowsky’s excessive rubato in places, which robs the accompaniment figure of its effect. Elsewhere the absence of pedal contributes to a feeling of dryness.

Saint-Saens, “My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice” (Samson and Delilah) —Meyerbeer, “Ah, My Son” (The Prophet); Margaret Matzenauer, contralto (Victor).

This is one of Victor's Black Label records, a represssing of an older recording of one of the Metropolitan's famous ‘voices of 20-odd years ago. The reproduction, naturally, is of another day, and the orchestra is of inferior caliber. But these factors cannot obscure the rich texture and velvety phrase line of Mme. Metzenauer’s singing, particularly in the Meyerbeer aria.

Casadesus; “Le Jardin des Amours” (Pavane, Passe - pied, tendre, Canarie); La Societe . des Instruments Anciens (Columbia).

Henri Casadesus, who founded the Societe des Instruments Anciens, has written a suite for his ensemble which recaptures the letter of 17th Century music, but not its spirit. And he has .given his music the undoubted advantage of more modern orchestral treatment. The instrumentation - of the group - includes viole d'amour, quinton, viole de gambe, Lasse de viole .and clavecin (harpsichord). Their concerted efforts fall sweetly upon the ear, awakening the forgotten beauty of instruments which had vanished until M. Casedesus, the Dolmetsches of London and a few other enterprising artists restored them to a rightful place in our current musical life.

2 8 8 so now the delegates from Tin \Pan Alley have the floor. From Bluebird: Charlie Barnet and his orchestra have tried the Tommy Dorsey trick of devoting - both sides of a platter to a single number. Their selection is “No ° Name Jive,” and the. Yesults are a complete success. The boys have plenty of room for an extended jam session which rises at times to the upper regions of boogie-woogie inspiration, Piano, trumpet, tenor, clarinet, trombone and bass step up and take their cuts in a rally which ought to have the jive hounds on their feet and Cheering at the end. Two tunes from Irving Berlin's

popular score for “Louisiana Purchase” make up the current Tony Pastor offering. They are the excellent title song of the show, -7ith vocals by Kay Foster, and “The ‘Lord Done Fixed Up . My Soul,” which isn’t any more successful than most pseudo-spirituals. As far as I'm concerned, Glenn Miller and his boys never cut a better disc than that of “Slow Freight” and “Bugle Call Rag.” The first is low-down, .mean and draggin’, while the other is a drummer’s (not bugler’s) holiday, done at breakneck speed. Swell playing from the word go.
