EXPECTS RISE IN|

VALUE OF LAND

Dr. E. L. Butz Says Present Price Levels :Highest : Since 1930.

SR slow. improvement in Indiana farm land values is probable, according to Dr. E. L. Butz, Purdue ~ University professor, who spoke .yesterday at the Rural Leadership

. conference at Purdue. ‘Dr. Butz, who is a member of the fang management -department 1 ty, said the farm price levels are now higher than they had been since 1930. Dr. Butz said, however, that Indiana land prices per acre were still below: the rest of the nation, particularly the East North: Central section. The present level is 74. per cent of the 1912-14 prices, he said.

Cites Two Indices

He cited the discrepancy between + farm commodity prices and farm land values since 1933 as an outstanding reason for a rise. He said since that year the index of commedity prices went from 51 to 93, . Whereas the increase in land values _xose from 53 to 74. Other bright spots he cited were prospects for a gradually rising price level and continued improvement in farm earnings, low interest ' rates and ample credit, and a continued governmental tendency to shift the tax burden from real estate. Another reason is the expectation in some quarters, of a repetition of the World War real estate boom, which Dr. Butz. characterized as a “buoyant factor.” Dr. Butz also prédicted a sirog demand for land: for investment purposes as a “dual’ Yesulf of uncertainty * in alternative financial ventures and as a hedge against monetary inflation.”

A: water 1ily pool should have lots of ‘sunshine and protection frem

cold north winds—this last being supplied either by nearby buildings or by a windbreak of trees and shrubs. : / For larger pools, cement construection is the most satisfactory. Water depth may vary from 115 to 41; feet. If, as is likely with a formal pool, the plants are to be removed each fall and replaced in the spring, vertical sidewalls are permissible. If the lilies are to remain outside, as in a more natural type of pool, the sides should be somewhat inclined so as to lessen ice pressure. In either case ib is a good idea to

have a coping around the: ok of the walls. that should protrude so as to hide construction details. The excavation should allow for three inches of stone below the concrete base and eight’inches for the base and wall proper. The drain should be placed at one side of the pool, rather than in the center and

the bottom level should be sloped to carry off the water. This location facilitates cleaning and minimizes the length of drain pipe which must pass through concrete. The concrete, itself, made of one part cement, three parts sand’ and

two parts stone, with a little lamp-

black or other coloring matter, should be poured in the bottom to a depth of fourth inches. .

Wire Adds Srength

‘Wired netting, “for strength, should be laid on the concrete and another section four inches deep added. Rods should be placed at the sides, bending upward through the forms to re-inforce the sidewalls. The sidewalls should be six inches in width. The entire inner surface should be smoothed with a one-inch layer of cement mixed with two parts sand. ¢ Small pools may ‘be made. of sheet lead soldered together into position. These will conform ‘easily

quickly to an inconspicuous color. Edges of a lead pool may be made to look natural by judicious use of rocks and plant material. Hardy water lilies may be set out as soon as you can get into the pools. Their only care is plenty of cow manure and a thorough division every three or four years to

.| prevent overcrowding.

Grow Like Iris

They grow much like the common iris and may be left out-of-doors with a foot or so of water above them or covered with leaves or straw. They also may be brought indoors in boxes and wrapped. in damp burlap through the winter. Tropical water. lilies require much more care and from the amateur’s standpoint it is much simpler to buy a fresh stock each spring. In any case, they cannot be planted outside until the temperature stays above 70 degrees F., or they will go to sleep—and may stay that way. Propagating is an interesting and easy subject with, water lilies. The large roots which will have formed by -the end of surhmer are almost impossible to store. Babies, however, form around the roots. When the plants are dug after the first frost, these small, nut-shaped tubers should be removed and stored in slightly moist sand, in closed containers, until early spring, when the sunlight begins to grow
