merican 1 League Leaders Race Down the June Stretch,
Tied Up in the
Lost Column
Only Numbers of Games Played Gives Cleveland The Lead—Yanks Break’ Losing Streak
By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YOEK, June 27.—The American League today had one of those National League touches to it as the three leaders came galloping down the June stretch all tied in the
lost column. Cleveland is still in the van, with a 2l4-game|
}'ad. over the Tigers and a three-game lead over the Red

to the last-place Senators, the gap
is only 14% games. In a week's play a last-place club could climb

fourth-place club could drop into the cellar. | N. L. Close, Too
The National League has a dingdong race on also, but it isn’t quite as close as the American League affair, There's a 17-game gap between the league-leading Reds and the last-place Phillies. The three leaders, the Reds, Dodgers and Giants, are bunched in the usual National League fashion. Red Ruffing brought the Yanks out of their four-game losing streak by quelling Cleveland in a 3-1 game as the World's Champions closed their disastrous Western trip with four victories against nine setbacks. Ruffing pitched a six-hitter to win
“his second game of the trip, and
bring his record to six and six. Joe
DiMaggio’s single in the fourth drove in two runs and another single accounted for the final Yank run in the ninth. Red Sox Whip Tigers
Held scoreless for eight innings
. {by Rookie Johnny Gorsica, the Red
Sox batted him from the box in the ninth and scored three runs to beat the Tigers, 3-1. Until the ninth the Red Sox had made only three hits. Hits by Finney, Foxx, Tabor and Cronin and a passed ball by Tebbetts did the damage. Rookie Herb Hash, who relieved Jim Bagby in the eighth, was credited with his seventh victory. The Browns’ taste of first division
ple was brief as the Athletics]
knocked them back to fifth place with a 9-4 defeat. ' The Yanks moved back _into fourth place. George Caster, who leads the American League in defeats with 11, held the Browns to seven hits, winning his second game. Sam Chapman hit a homer with the bases loaded. A two-run rally in the ninth enabled the White Sox to come from behind and beat the Senators, 7-6.
Pirates, Phillies Split
The Pirates and - Phillies got a standoff in a twin bill. Two exPirates, Johnny Rizzo and .y Blanton, starred in the Phils’ 4-2 victory in the opener. Rizzo drove in all his club’s runs with a homer, double and single. Blanton held the Pirates to seven hits, besting Joe Bowman. The Pirates slugged four Phil pitchers for 14 hits in winning the nightcap, 11-6. Spud Davis hit

Time, they say, doth change all things. And for the proof of this you have only to look at the American League standings as of today
and as of June 27, 1939.
Leading by 14% games a year ago, the World Champion Yankees, the Murderers’ Row the anything-you-might-want-to-call-them in 1939 as long as it meant tough, now that outfit is in fourth place. And to top that the Yanks are only a game ahead of the nobody-else-but-the St. Louis Browns. The Browns, you know, are the team about which a St. Louis paper felt it inadvisable and impertinent to cover in spring training. The sheet didn’t even send a reporter around to see what
was up.
In fourth last year like the Yanks are this year, the Cleveland Cry-Babies are now atop the heap, two and one-half ahead of Detroit. Emerging from their worst Western trip in 10 years, the Yanks, however, did manage to beat the bleating Vittmen yesterday, 3 to 1. But who's afraid of the big bad, Yanks?

McCarthy with the bases loaded ir the 10th inning gave the New York Giants a 10-9 win over the St. Lo '3 Cardinals last night. The Giar's hammered out 18 hits, including homers by Danning, Joe Moore and Cuccinello. Ernie Xoy and Johnny Mize hit four-baggers for the Cards. Mize’'s homer was his 20th. ‘A single and two walks, one intentional, set the stage for McCarthy's hit. ;
