Fall Forecast
War Won’t Affect Cost Of Clothes Says
Designer.
By HELEN WORDEN Times Special Writer
NEW YORK, June 27.— The wholesale dress, coat and suit collections now being prepared for fall and winter trade show the influence of the European war in confradictory. ways. Paris, subdued by . tragic conditions, offers dark colors in the recent collections. But in an effort to put the reverse on a war-af-fected public ‘the 2200° manufac-
turers whose lines dictate what the |.
American woman shall wear are featuring autumn collections from $2 up to $200 wholesale, which contain the gayest clothes we have seen in years. : arlet, emerald green, electric blue and even citron yellow are some of the colors being used for street wear, designers along Seventh Ave., said today. Ordinarily these vivid Here-I-Am shades would be tried out first on clothes horses in the upper brgckets. But, according to the manufacturers of popular priced lines, the wife whose husband is earning between $50 and $70 a week is going to have a chance to launch these new colors this fall. For $9.98 up she can be as gay as a trdbical flower garden. ” t ”
“WE feel that women don’t want to be reminded of the war any more than they can help,” Morris Kolchin, - sandy-haired executive director of the Affiliated Dress Mfr’s. Inc., said today. “That's why we're giving them cheerful colors.” Information on exactly what the wholesale designers though would appeal to the American girl besides bright colors was available at Bender & Hamburger, 498 Seventh Ave. “We are going to give women an entirely new look,” said David Bender. “She’ll have slimmer hips, more natural shoulders and a longer back silhouette. Paris may holler longer skirts, but we know our American woman looks. best in normal-length skirts, so that’s what she’ll get.” 2 4 s
CLARE POTTER, designer, tall, slim and smart in a covert suit, also talked of foreign fabrics at Charles Nudelman’s, at 550 Seventh Ave. She is using foreign fabrics and getting them, although she feels the war’s influence in the uncertainty of their arrival. “Consequently we gamble a little more on our orders,” she said, “but if there is any shortage, the same thing will happen that did in t-» last war when there is the demand. Our mills will make the kind of material we want. Our dyeing was fierce before 1914. Then we learned a great deal about it because we had to.” “We are much more daring with color than the French,” she said. “Of course, there will always be some black, but I think the really smart woman will wear a great deal
{of color. It's been a problem to use it for the street and yet not get the| |dress too gay.” ; She sees no rise in the cost of
materials and feels, as they all do, that there will be no change in prices this fall. ‘A $29.50 dress will
